Data out yesterday in China saw continued strong growth with GDP at 7.3% and industrial production at 8%. Both numbers a tad higher than expectations. This flowed into the commodity markets all of which had strong(ish) moves, a turnaround from recent trends. The Loonie and the Aussie (briefly) both jumped on the news with the Loonie sustaining the run. The BOC meet tonight and it is expected to maintain rates at 1%. Plonker Poloz speaks afterwards and that will be the key for the currency’s direction.
ECB
Stocks continue the bounce with strong earnings still pushing prices higher, led by Apple. The ECB also had a positive effect on the markets both sides of the Atlantic. Although the bank doesn’t meet this week investors are eyeing Draghi and expecting him to do more…mmm good luck. I did see the ECB in the bond market buying Italian bonds, and maybe that is what drove this sentiment. This isn’t news as last month Draghi said he would do this. However, it is now widely and wildly expected that Draghi will do some sort of quantitative easing before the year is out. I have heard all this before so take it with a grain of salt. That said, it is doing to the markets what we expect, pushing the Eurodollar lower and stocks higher.
US Rates
Speaking of shifting sands, last week the US rate rise expectations for October 2015 sat at 51%, overnight that moved to 49%. In another wise pretty quiet night this saw the US dollar whip about, as traction for the continued trend tries to take hold. I do get the sense it is still on the cusp right now.
Finally whilst on rates, the RBA are worried that with low rates and low yield investors are seeking riskier assets to get a decent return. Not that they can do anything about that, they are “just sayin”

DATA HIGHLIGHTS TODAY – AU CPI. UK BOE votes. Canadian Retail Sales & MONETARY POLICY. US CPI
AUDUSD – A HHHL but also a test bar as greenback strengthened in the US session after the Aussie ran higher from China GDP. Still frothing so still staying away.
Resistance: 8865/8900/9000
Support: 8755/8660/8500
EURUSD – Engulfing bar, bearish close on the low. This is the first signal for a short and an aggressive entry would be to go in today with a small amount of capital. If today’s bar confirms with a LHLL then add to ittomorrow. Price again rejected the horizontal resistance and with plenty of room to move down on the momentum we are poised to take advantage.
Resistance: 12750/12860/13000
Support: 12615/12500/12380
GBPUSD – Also a bearish close but still a HHHL. The difference is in the 2 economies, one looking to stimulate, one looking to hike rates. I maintain the stance of buying pounds but not against the greenback.
Resistance: 1.63/1.6410/1.6525
Support: 1.6210/1.6150/1.6000
NZDUSD – A high test bar, off resistance level. Also could get aggressive on this today. Or wait for the confirmation of a LHLL and look at it tomorrow.
Resistance: 7920/8040
Support: 7810/7750/7700
USDCAD – BOC is out tonight and I can’t see a trade in this right now. Its in the middle of the decision to track lower with a stronger Loonie, or carry on with the stronger greenback. Maybe look at other crosses to trade the Canadian currency but stay out until Poloz has spoken either way.
Resistance: 1.1220/1.1275
Support: 1.1100/1.1050/1.0980
USDJPY – The rally stalled for a while there but has come back in after the Euro open yesterday. A bullish LHLL low test bar, could move stops closer as an option. If not in, then you could look at this today or in the lower timeframes.
Resistance: 110.50/113.73
Support: 108.44/107.39/106.70
