X Factor rallied on Sunday night to beat Strictly Come Dancing in the TV ratings for the first time this series, according to overnight figures.
The ITV singing competition was watched by 8.79 million people between 8.15pm and 9.15pm last night, while Strictly pulled in 8.49 million viewers at 7.20pm.
And although Simon Cowell, Cheryl and company can celebrate the first ratings victory of 2014, the audience was actually down 700,000 viewers from this time last year. Strictly was down 200,000 viewers on the same period.

On Saturday night, the BBC celebrity dancing show’s two-hour instalment - which aired at 6.30pm - attracted an impressive average of 9.04 million viewers while the X Factor’s marathon first live show was watched by an average of 6.92 million.

Elsewhere on Sunday evening, Downton Abbey was down a whopping 1.7 million viewers to 7.74 million and the new series of Homeland on Channel 4 kicked off with 1.52 million viewers.
