‘That was the difference between just singing the song and seeing someone developing into a real artist,’ offered Simon Cowell, somehow with a straight face. Even ignoring the issue of how well qualified Cowell is to discuss real ‘artists’, Jay James is never going to be one.

Freshly-turned 17, Lauren had been styled by her mentor with the subtlety and emphasis on the Natural Look we’ve come to expect from Cheryl – plastered in make-up and wearing a tiara, like a glam version of Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
Still her laid-back version of Happy was the only pleasant surprise of the night.
‘No way could I have faced this pressure when I was 17,’ Cheryl told her – forgetting to add ‘And I can’t sing as well as you even now.’

Verdict: Zero stage presence means still like watching a performance from a school concert, albeit a very good one.

15. Only The Young
A nightmarish medley of Jailhouse Rock and Twist And Shout sung by Only The Young? Not even The Beatles deserved that.
‘We want to be original,’ they said. Well, you failed.

Verdict: A future in Holiday Camps awaits, although not necessarily singing.
