WAGE DEAL STAVES OFF PUBLIC SECTOR STRIKE Successful wage negotiations between the government and state workers bodes well for other public sector employees An agreement raising the wages of 170,000 state employees by 12.8 percent over the next three years and adding a number of benefits has reduced the likelihood of a walkout by public sector employees. The wage hike for groups ranging from police officers to office workers is the largest for public employees since 1987, and comes after the gap between public and private sector wages was debated heavily in the 2007 general election. According to calculations by a nurses' union, public sector wages are 27 percent lower than private sector wages. In the next round of negotiations, representatives for the country's 500,000 municipal workers, which includes groups such as nurses and school teachers, will have their turn to sit down with Finance Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen to work out a new three-year contract of their own. And though municipal workers said they would seek a larger pay increase than that negotiated for state workers, the agreement sets the tone for their negotiations. Particularly the addition of fringe benefits such as an extension of a programme that gives parents paid days off to care for children, was hailed as an important win by union negotiators. 'The extra benefits mean that we'll be getting some of the same compensation increases that the private sector has seen in recent years,' said Sine Sunesen, lead negotiator for the CFU union. Commenting on yesterday's agreement, Rasmussen said the pay raises, and the range of fringe benefits ensured that it contained 'something for all age groups'. He highlighted what he called the 'reverse part-time' option for employees as a way to help alleviate a looming shortage of employees as baby boomers reach pension age. The problem has been exacerbated in recent years as a booming economy has the unemployment rate at a 30-year low. The option allows employees to voluntarily extend their 37-hour workweek, in exchange for a commensurate pay increase. The Copenhagen Post
