I hear it’s 孙燕姿 Sun Yanzi again. Come on… What? Is this the 3rd time she is doing it? Been there, done that. She is a good singer but isn’t it time our National Day promotions become more ‘creative’ and do something different rather than repeating itself? It was a good idea in the beginning to get an iconic Singapore pop star to front the promotion. Celebrity endorsement is one of many effective tools. It was meaningful when the concept was about celebrating Singapore’s success but… Usually the organizing committee would come together and nominate their choice of the most iconic singer. Their criteria became debatable when Kaira Kong 龚诗嘉 was chosen two years ago. She was then a relatively lesser known new star compared to other more popular ones like JJ Lin, Ado and Sun Ho who were dropped in favor of Kaira. So, let’s not go into the criteria… That year, the idea of a Singapore pop star for National Day song ended. I was happy to see some ‘breakthrough’ with the choice of lesser known personalities fronting the song last year. It wasn’t fantastic but it was refreshing for a change. I once saw a great music clip ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ by Qantas Airline (must see now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbGuqmaDgLA) more than 10 years ago. The beautiful song, the emotions, the purity of the children and the idea…it was a BIG hit! It didn’t even rely on any one single big star. Instead, many stars rushed to add the song in their next albums. I am worried when we start to recycle ideas for the same purpose. It is not easy to be original but show me something creative please.
