Top Trailers Available for Potential Oscar Contenders

Offering us glimpses into new worlds and stories, movie trailers have just a few minutes to show the premise of a film and what viewers can expect to see. Teasers are often a minute or less. These minutes have the potential to create or destroy excitement surrounding a film. Potential Oscar contenders, such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, still haven’t released trailers to the public. As of right now, the only glimpse of Anderson’s anticipated film is in a minute long preview for the 52nd New York Film Festival. Many of the projected contenders have released their trailers or teasers, though. Here are some of the best trailers/teasers available:

【Birdman】
The trailer shows Michael Keaton as a former film star, known for his portrayal of a superhero named Birdman, struggling to make a comeback after the end of his glory days. With bizarre scenes (Keaton running through Times Square in his underwear) and absurd lines (“This place is horrible, smells like balls.”), the trailer captures the surreal essence of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s newest film. The film hits theaters Oct. 17.

【Foxcatcher】
Both the first and second teaser trailers for Foxcatcher portray Channing Tatum going down a dark road as Mark Schultz and an almost unrecognizable Steve Carell in his role as John du Pont. Based on the true story of brothers and wrestling gold medalists Mark and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) and Dave’s murder by du Pont, this biographical film has been gaining Oscar buzz since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Director Bennett Miller received the best director award at the festival for his third feature film. The film will be released Nov. 14.

【Gone Girl】
This eerie trailer pits Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) at the center of an investigation into his wife’s, Amy (Rosamund Pike), disappearance. The trailer is fueled by Amy’s chilling voiceovers as she talks about her relationship with her husband. “I feel like I could disappear,” she says at one point. This film is an adaption of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, a New York Times bestseller. The film is premiering on the opening night of the NYFF and will be released in theaters Oct. 3.

【The Imitation Game】
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing in the trailer for The Imitation Game. Turing and his fellow code-breakers, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), helped end WWII for their work to break the Nazi Enigma Code, which was perceived to be unbreakable. The film will be in theaters Nov. 21.

【Interstellar】
When the first official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was released in May, it amassed 19.5 million views. Since the release of its second trailer in July, there hasn’t been much else to learn about the film. What we know is that Matthew McConaughey heads to space with a team, including Anne Hathaway, to save mankind from an Earth that is becoming uninhabitable. There are a few glimpses of these beautifully intricate planets shown throughout the trailer. McConaughey is also portrayed as a father who must deal with decision to leave his family in an effort to save them. New posters promoting the film were released last week. Interstellar will hit theaters Nov. 7.

【Into the Woods】
This teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Broadway musical is void of all music, but it does offer some glimpses into the fairytale world. Most prominent is Meryl Streep as the witch, but there is a peek at Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Jack and the beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel in this teaser. The film will be released Dec. 25.

【Nightcrawler】

Jake Gyllenhaal captures the essence of a crazy, sleazy man on the brink of insanity as he traverses the freelance world of crime reporting. The trailer captures his descent into this mad world, and at one point in the trailer, he shatters a mirror. This scene resulted in Gyllenhaal receiving stitches for a cut on his hand. The film hits theaters on Oct. 31.

【The Theory of Everything】
The trailer for The Theory of Everything puts science in the backseat and focuses on the relationship between Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his then-wife, Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones). The film follows Stephen and Felicity’s love story before, during and after Stephen was diagnosed with motor neuron disease and how the couple dealt with life’s curveballs. The film opens Nov. 7.

【Unbroken】
Based on Unbroken, the book by Laura Hillenbrand’s, the film tells the true story of olympian and WWII Japanese prisoner-of-war survivor Louis Zamperini. The trailer traces Zamperini’s life from his rebellious childhood to his success as a track star before becoming an Olympian. It also follows him on his journey as a World War II airman and his survival in a raft for 47 days after a plane crash and two years as a POW. Angelina Jolie directs this biopic for her sophomore film, and Jack O’Connell stands out in the trailer for his portrayal of Zamperini. Unbroken will hit theaters Dec. 25.

【Wild】
Based on Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, the film takes Reese Witherspoon (Strayed) on a 1,000 mile journey. The trailer shows a variety of points throughout Strayed’s life that eventually led her on this solo hike through desert, mountains and other areas. The film opens Dec. 5.
