Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in Nightcrawler has been highly praised by critics ahead of the film's US and UK release.
Critics have primarily focussed on Gyllenhaal's performance and character. THR's Jordan Mintzer felt "Gyllenhaal does a fantastic job channeling Louis' outrageous and overwrought personality, whether he's offering up lame sermons on entrepreneurship or tying his greasy long hair into a knot." The majority have praised the actor and where others have seen fault with the film, including Slant Magazine's Tomas Hachard, they claim it is not Gyllenhaal's performance but "the limits of his character."
Yet it's not just mental preparation for the role Gyllenhaal has focussed on but the physical appearance of his character. The 33-year-old actor lost 30 pounds (2.14 stone) for the role to gain his creepy, unhealthy appearance and pallor, as E! reports. Gyllenhaal's physical appearance has been commented on by critics with the Guardian's Henry Barnes writing "Gyllenhaal, slimmed down and bug-eyed, looks like Nosferatu, but has the manic vulnerability of Andy Kaufman."

You can’t take your eyes off the screen for this one which contains a truly creepy but dead-on go-for-broke performance from Jake Gyllenhaal as a truly oddball, but enterprising guy who weasles his way into the local tv news business by getting a police scanner and rushing to grisly crime scenes to get “exclusive” video that can be sold to an unscrupulous news director (played very nicely by Rene Russo doing her best impression of Faye Dunaway in Network) at a low rated Los Angeles news TV station. Aside from being just a pure adrenaline rush, Nightcrawler (an unfortunate title that suggests this might be a horror film) makes some potent comments on the moral and ethical decline of local tv news. It’s a terrific script from director Dan Gilroy and has been getting nice word on the street here, deservedy so.

But to focus too much on the risks Nightcrawler doesn’t take is a little ungrateful, considering what a thrill it is to have an adult-targeted crime story that’s not pulling a geezer out of retirement to be an action hero, or adapting a comic book. With a mesmerizing performance from Gyllenhaal and Gilroy’s solid handling of the material, Nightcrawler makes for a deviously enjoyable middle-ground between arthouse and schlockhouse. If you want more like it, then, to paraphrase Lou, you have to buy the ticket.

Gyllenhaal, who summons career-best work, simply couldn't have played this character a few years ago. His boyish handsomeness undergoes a transformation into ferrety slickness, the actor hammering home Louis's mania in ferocious, near-OCD monologues—one of which will bring your audience to stupefied applause—that reveal a truly dangerous operator.

Jake Gyllenhaal is starting to nail the delivery of vaguely unhinged characters whose outer actions mask disturbing interior lives.
Last year he did it with the creepy cop chasing a kidnapper in “Prisoners.” This year at the Toronto International Film Festival he does it with the ambulance-chasing news videographer Lou Bloom (but we wonder: is that his real name?) in “Nightcrawler,” which debuted to a warm ovation at the Elgin Theater on Friday night.
To play the part of Bloom, Gyllenhaal lost 30 pounds and acquired the gaunt, wild-eyed look of a man perpetually on the edge of mental breakdown. He smiles far too much for anyone's comfort. He's a man with secrets we probably don't want to know.

I can unequivocally say it’s a gem of a lean, mean film that never let’s its foot off the gas pedal with an iconic antihero in Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Lou Bloom who might currently be tops on hardcore cinephiles’ Halloween costume lists come October.
There have been comparisons to Drive that I can agree with in this respect. It may not be quite as laborious, but Nightcrawler is slick above all else. What makes it better is that Ryan Gosling’s stoicism is replaced by Gyllenhaal’s no-nonsense loquaciousness steering conversations while subtly turning the knife when those he’s engaged least expect it. His Bloom is very detailed oriented and very calculating, causing him to pause and collect his thoughts in order to take control if not already the smartest person in the room. The scariest part of his derangement is that he almost always is.
Gyllenhaal’s role overshadows the whole while also making it better.

In addition, it's a showcase for what may well be the best performance Jake Gyllenhaal has given so far. It was interesting watching this in the same theater where I saw "Prisoners" last year, because just setting those two films side by side and considering them, it's apparent just how strong an actor he is these days. He seems to build his characters from the outsidein, transforming himself almost completely in the details of how he moves, how he carries his weight, how he looks. In "Nightcrawler," he looks sick, like he's been stretched too tight and he's about to tear, and that would seem to be an apt description of his inner weather in the film as well.
