Every signing is a major gamble – about £50 million over five years in the case of Welbeck – but his all-round performance last night certainly added to the view that Arsenal might just have pulled off one of the more astute transfers of the entire summer window.

As Welbeck thrived amid the faith that was being shown in him by Roy Hodgson, it was also to be reminded of a talk that Arsene Wenger gave to Malaysian businessmen during Arsenal’s tour of Asia in 2011. The speech – which ended with a spontaneous standing ovation - was　 about the development of young talent in football and the lessons that can be transferred 　　across all walks of life. Wenger had made a point of underlining the importance of a player’s daily desire for self-improvement but, in the case of Welbeck, his observations on the 　　　accompanying need for opportunity are also striking.

“It’s my job to know when something is there,” said Wenger. “You need the talent, but also you need to meet someone who believes in you and gives you a chance. Plenty of people have　 talent in life but they do not meet someone who gives them a chance.

And can you really imagine that there is not one guy in Africa with the talent to be a Formula One driver? Why are they not there? Because no one has given them a chance. Wenger, of course, has sometimes shown an excessive willingness to indulge young talent　 but, in this instance, you have to wonder if his outlook will be rewarded. Yes, buying Welbeck might ultimately have been all about a pragmatic and last-minute need for his team but it will 　also be fascinating to see how he responds to the responsibility of a prolonged opportunity.

The signs during this past week with England could hardly have been more positive. After 　　forcing through a permanent move to Arsenal last Monday – rather than Tottenham’s offer 　of a one-year loan – Welbeck has looked and sounded galvanised before he has had even so much as a kick for his new team.

“I*ve envisaged myself playing in this team before,” he said last week. “With the magnificent 　players in midfield, I can run on to the end of those balls and slot them away. I*d like to　　 bring pace and power to the game. At Arsenal, we*re not short of combination football and I 　like to join in on that and get in behind defenders.”

It certainly felt telling that, upon putting England ahead last night, he sought out two of his new club team-mates – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers – to celebrate.

Arsenal supporters may need to be patient about Welbeck’s occasional lapses in the final 　　third – his first-half failure to pick out Raheem Sterling for what would have been a tap-in　 last night was a case in point – but his all-round qualities will offer considerable improvement 　in the striker’s position.
