Ladies* Code Accident Resurfaces Memories Of Other Serious Idol Car Crashes And The Need To Take More Precautions In Between Hectic Schedules
By Tamar Herman | September 03, 2014 11:02 AM EDT
The sad accident that cost Ladies* Code member EunB her life recalls several other incidents of idols in serious car crashes. The most recent tragedy has fueled new discussions about holding entertainment companies and sasaeng fans accountable for the safety and well-being of the stars.
On September 3, Ladies* Code got into a car accident that resulted in the death of EunB and the driver as well as critically injuring members RiSe and Sojung. Ashley and Zuly, along with two of the group*s stylists, obtained minor injuries that did not require surgery. RiSe went through eleven hours of surgery before being put into the ICU.
This horrible accident resulted in compassion from all over the world, particularly among other Korean celebrities who have been sending condolences through social media. It also reignited issues of idol safety, since this is not the first incident where Korean pop stars have been severely injured in car accidents due to recklessness.
Solo singer Eru left a message to entertainment companies while leaving his condolences to EunB: "Ah.. It*s such a shame. I offer my deepest condolences. If you are to assign them a hectic schedule, you must take care of them. The safety of those who are assets to your company should be more important than their schedules. No matter how bothersome it may be, you must always check the condition of the car being mobilized and the driver who is to drive. To all the managers in the entertainment industry."
Over the past few years, there have been several high profile car accidents that were caused, at least in part, due to the over-packed schedule of idols. Sasaeng ("stalker") fans have also caused several accidents by pursuing idols* cars. However, Eru*s message is aimed at trying to prevent avoidable car accidents.
Ladies* Code*s company, Polaris Entertainment, admitted that the weather conditions were not ideal, as Korea is currently in the middle of monsoon season, and that the car*s back wheel had come off. As a result, the car spun and hit a guard rail. Eru*s message implies that the accident could have been avoided if the vehicle was better taken care of.
The Korea Herald reported that EunB was not wearing her seat when the car went out of control.
Other idol car accidents also happened due to recklessness. In 2004, TVXQ was involved in a car accident that seriously injured the members, believed to have been caused by speeding. The same day, Idol group WANTED was also involved in a car accident around the same time, and one of its members, Seo Jaeho, died.
In 2007, Super Junior*s Kyuhyun nearly died after a car crash injured him, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, and Shindong. In a 2012 interview, Leeteuk said "the accident happened because of carelessness on the part of our manager."
Along with these major accidents, there have been numerous smaller accidents, including recent ones including INFINITE and Dal Shabet.
Korean media is questioning whether the non-stop schedules of idols is endangering them, especially when Korea is known for poor traffic safety, ranking only second to Mexico in the numbers of traffic deaths in OEC countries according to WHO.
