Q:
You have acted both in theater and in film taken from books, such as Sense and Sensibility, for example, by Jane Austen. How do you react and behave when there are differences between what the film director wants and what’s in the book? So what do you do in those situations?
A:
You have to become a politician (laughs). The writer is the most important thing. So when we made Sense and Sensibility the most important thing was called Jane Austen.
[something not recorded].
It’s a difficult question, because I don’t make decisions about characters in advance. So I’m much happier to be the victim of somebody else’s imagination.

Q:
What do you think about Quiddich in real life. [He probably doesn’t know about the existence of those groups and I guess he missed some words. He gives another, unrelated, answer - ed.].
A:
I think Quiddich would be much to difficult for my character with all those black clothes. No, he just watches.

Q:
[Something not recorded, about cinema and theatre, same ol’ story - ed.].
A:
[…] Theatre, when the reharsal period is over, there’s you and… Well, it looks like this.(laughs, pointing at the audience). Except the lights are out. And so, in the theatre the actor is very much more in charge of his destiny. But I’m lucky because I’ve had time to know how one discipline helps and affects the other.

[Now he wonders if people in the last rows can see him or wants him to stand up. Standing ovation. The presenter says there’s a big screen behind him showing everything, so everyone could see, but he stands up anyway. People cheers. Very kind of him, btw. The only actor at the Festival who did that - ed.]

Q:
Of all the roles, all the characters you have played, which one do you like the most and of all the things you’ve said as an actor, which is the one you enjoyed saying the most? Which line?
A:
I don’t really have a favourite because you have to remember that when you work it’s not just the character, it’s a different group of actors you become friends, and different countries that you worked in that you build relationships with… So my memory is never of the character.

Q:
Idea and ispiration for The Winter Guest. [Then, he was asked to say “Always” live.]
A:
The idea came from a conversation with a friend of mine, called Lindsay Duncan, and she was telling me about her mother, who was in the early stages of A
lz
heimer’s disease. And that she had found her one day in the garden wearing a wedding hat and Wellington booths. And she was pruning the roses. But when Lindsay told me that, she was smiling, and there was something that was happy and sad about the image. And then I talked to another friend, a writer, called Sharman Macdonald, who now has a very famous daugher, Keira Knightley. And I said: will you write a script about this story? And she said yes so the story then became all hers – and the names.

Q:
Reading the script of the last Harry Potter, were you expecting Snape’s change and what was your reaction?
A:
I was relieved… I don’t know about surprised. I thought it was a proper ending. And I think it was very good for Ralph Fiennes and myself to be able to play a scene together as actor without so much computer graphics (smiles).

Q:
You were a graphic designer, passionate about it. You said it was a more stable work than acting. What made you change your mind?
A:
I think there’s a kind of tyranny in education, which says that you must decide what you’re going to be at 14 or 16. So yes, I was a designer, and became an actor, then eventually I became a director. There’s a new film that I directed which comes out next year and that’s when the two jobs come together. Because it means that I can talk in short hand to all the heads of department like the cinematographer and the costume designer and the production designer, because I know the way their mind works. So I would say to all of you here: it’s never to late to change your mind. (Applause).

Q:
Actor, director, writer. Being them all, which one do you prefer and which are pros and cons.
A:
Well they’re very different jobs, I don’t know how to answer your question except to say that in order to do any of them, and maybe all of them, you have to stay open. ‘Cause whether you’re a writer, or an actor or a director, what you are is a channel between… Here’s a story and there’s an audience. So you must may sure that you remain the most efficient channel between story and audience.
2014年07月27日 16点07分 12
so you must may sure…那个"may"是不是应该换成“make”

Q:
Criteria to accept offered roles and if he rejected some of them.
A:
Yeah, there’ve been lots I decided not to take on, because I thought they were bad scripts! (laughs). Every day is different in your life so you open a script and, first of all, you’re glad to be offered it, and secondly if you keep turning the pages then that’s a good thing. I think it’s good to be part of a film that doesn’t insult the audience, its intelligence…

Q:
Were you a mentor to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Ruper Grint?
A:
I’m glad to say that Daniel… You know, it’s very special to watch somebody grow from 10 to 22. And when you’re filming – I was probably only filming for seven weeks each year – you don’t quite notice that each year they’ve grown and change a bit. But of course during that span of time there are different things you can say to somebody at different times because they are a year older. So it’s only in the last two years of filming the series that I was able to talk to Daniel about ‘work’. I think it’s terrific that he’s turned into a very thoughtful and multi-faced actor now. During the filming the workload on those three young people was enormous… So I think it’s a miracle that they are sane! (laughs)

Q:
During your career you have worked with a great range of actors. Is there any other one you haven’t worked with and you would like to?
A:
There are wonderful actors out here, this is what is great about the job I have. There are wonderful actors emerging every day. And so there’s probably somebody who’s going to arrive next week and I’ll think ‘I wanna work with them’. On the other hand, I’ve been very lucky to work with actors who I grow up watching and admiring, like Michael Gambon; he was a great hero of mine – and he still is. And what you don’t know about him is that he’s very naughty on film set (smiles). He spends a lot of time making us laugh… And I don’t think my character should be laughing very much! I have a great job and I’m very lucky, so I’m happy to work with anybody who’s happy to work with me!(People cheers). Grazie!
