Sänger Declan Galbraith wagt nach dem Ende der ersten Karriere einen Neustart Von Daliah Hoffmann

Declan Galbraith war der kleine Junge, der "An Angel" von der Kelly Familiy coverte und schon mit zehn Jahren sein erstes Album veröffentlichte. Er stand mit Elton John auf der Bühne, hat beim Thronjubiläum der Queen gesungen und weltweit mehr als 200.000 Alben verkauft, "Thank You" erreichte Goldstatus. Vor allem in Asien liebte man den süßen Briten. Doch auch diese Kinderstar-Karriere ging seinen natürlichen Gang, 2010, mit 19 Jahren, entschied sich Galbraith gegen Coversongs, gegen Massenvermarktung. Er zog nach Berlin, wo er wieder ganz klein und von vorne anfängt – mit einer Bigband und eigenen Songs.
Die Welt:
Wieso zogen Sie von London nach Berlin?
Ein Großteil meiner Vergangenheit und Karriere hat hier inDeutschland stattgefunden. Viele meiner Freunde leben hier, und vor zweieinhalb Jahren hab' ich dann für mich entscheiden: Es ist Zeit auszuziehen, es ist Zeit für ein Abenteuer. Also bin ich nach Berlin, auch, um ganz neu anzufangen.
Berlin ist auch eine Stadt mit vielen Möglichkeiten für Musiker...
Ich hoffe doch. Berlin ist ein vibrierender und lebendiger Ort. In London ist die Indie-Szene nicht so ausgeprägt wie hier. In Berlin habe ich das Gefühl, dass alle drei Minuten ein neues Start-Upgegründet wird, es gibt so viele interessante Dinge zu erleben. Es ist eine wunderschöne und tolle Stadt, von der ich als Kind nicht viel mitbekommen habe, weil ich nur im Auto saß.
Was hat Sie inspiriert?
Zum einen meine keltische Herkunft und meine Familie. Mein Großvater hat mir früher immer irische Volksmusik vorgespielt, diese Elemente begleiten mich noch heute. Auch wenn der Song eher rockig klingt, benutze ich lieber Cello und Violine statt Elektrogitarre. Mein Vater hat mir Bands wie Red Zepplin, Pink Floyd und Deep Purple näher gebracht. Und dann gibt es noch meine eigenen musikalischen Entdeckungen: Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, die poetischen Schriftsteller. All das zusammen ergibt meinen neuen Stil, meine Musik. Bei den Inhalten meiner Lieder versuche ich, nicht nur über Liebe und Beziehung zu schreiben, obwohl sich die Themen schon einschleichen. Es sind ja auch starke Gefühle, die jeder von uns kennt. Ich schreibe aber auch viel über darüber, was um mich herum passiert, was in der Welt geschieht: Krieg, Hungersnot, Leiden. Es ist wie eine Therapie, über diese Dinge zu schreiben.
Wieso sind Sie nicht dem typischen Kinderstar-Syndrom - Abstürzen, Drogen, Misserfolgen - zum Opfer gefallen?
Meine Karriere hat sich über mehrere Jahre hinweg gezogen und kam nicht über Nacht. Meine Eltern haben sich immer gut um mich gekümmert, sowohl damals als auch jetzt noch. Ich hatte auch nie einen Bodyguard, obwohl es das Label angeboten hat. Dafür sind mein Vater und mein Manager immer mit mir rumgereist.
Was war der denkwürdigste Moment Ihrer jungen Jahre?
Als ich meine goldene Schallplatte in Deutschland und Österreicherhalten habe, das war schon eine besonders intensive Zeit. Ich weiß noch, wie ich damals eine Mail von meinem Label bekommen habe, als meine Familie und ich gerade am Flughafen in London saßen. Sie gratulierten mir und sagten, mein "Thank You" Album sei auf dem zweiten Platz in den Chart, direkt hinter Nelly Furtado.
Wann haben Sie beschlossen, ein Comeback zu starten?
Eigentlich hat mich die Musik selbst zurückgeholt, auch wenn das nach einem Klischee klingt. Ich habe nie aufgehört, Musik zu machen, nur eben nicht für die Öffentlichkeit. Ich habe jeden Tag Gitarre gespielt, gesungen und geschrieben. Meine eigene Musik zu machen, es dieses Mal wirklich richtig zu machen, hat mich angetrieben. Ich habe diese Vergangenheit, aber es wirkt doch sehr fremd. Manchmal, wenn ich alte Auftritte und Videos sehe, erkenne ich mich nicht wieder. Es gab auch einen Moment, in dem ich mich sehr desillusioniert gefühlt habe, weil all das nicht meine eigenen Entscheidungen waren. Das ganze fühlt sich an wie ein anderes Leben. Heute ist das ganz anders, es ist ein komplett neuer Start, und es fühlt sich ganz anders an.

What was the most memorable moment of your young years?
