Life Before The Limelight
Georgia born-n-bred singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips didn't just emerge out of the ether as an American Idol creation. The performer has been working on his craft since the age of 14, receiving guidance from his friend and future brother-in-law Benjamin Neil. The performer was warmly received as a local musician in his pre-fame days and he also kept busy lending a hand at his family's pawn shop.

Industrial Systems Technology Is His "Backup Plan"
We don't have the numbers in front of us at the moment, but we're willing to bet that there aren't too many platinum-selling recording artists out there with an "Industrial Systems Technology" degree to fall back on. Phillip graduated from Albany Technical College with a major in that field in 2012. He said, "Well I’m a musician. I love to play music and play guitar but my dad told me that I needed to get a backup plan. So this is what my uncle does, so I came into this field," shared instructor Robert Permenter. Phillip kept up with his classes during the American Idol tryout process, maintaining a healthy 3.2 grade-point-average while doing so. Sadly, the young entertainer was too busy with Idolcommitments to be able to make it for the graduation ceremony.

An Idol Is Crowned
As you've likely figured out from the use of the word "Idol" in the previous slides, Phillip Phllips can boast having an American Idol win to his name. The victory came after 132 million votes were cast in the big season 11 showdown, with Phillip emerging as the victor. The singer's massive hit "Home" holds the illustrious status of being the biggest selling coronation song in the show's history. (We'll do a little more analysis of that song in the next slide over.) Along the way, Phillip earned the praise of judges and music superstars alike.

The Dude Is Tough As Nails
Phillip's been a pretty busy guy and he's managed to achieve a lot of those impressive feats while also dealing with a series of chronic kidney ailments. The star has undergone a variety of kidney operations (including some reconstructive surgery) and has battled through the discomfort to do what he loves. Phillip even endured a series of kidney stones throughout his time on Idol,electing to hold off on surgery until the competition was complete.

Phillip Will Take Fans "Behind The Light" In May
Fans craving something new from the "Home" hitmaker will get their wish in 2014. Phillip's sophomore album, Behind The Light, is slated to hit stores on May 19. The LP will re-team the entertainer with Gregg Wattenberg, whom fans may recognize as the co-producer of Phillip's debut effort. Looking for a taste of what's on the new record? The album's lead single, "Raging Fire," should tick that box quite nicely. The video for the new tune was released just last week.
