The Drax Files : World Makers
by Draxtor Despres
"The Drax Files: World Makers" profiles the creative people behind the avatars who move the virtual world of Second Life forward with their passion and persistence. Mixed reality interviews with subjects from all over the globe form the basis of personal stories that profile designers, game-makers, role-players and fashion aficionados, musicians, artists and social-issue activists: for these dedicated residents the avatar is not just a separate pixelated entity, but a true extension of themselves with which they navigate the digital space. The show will utilize real-life footage and Skype interviews as well as machinima from within Second Life and feature a range of creators from self-taught hobbyists to dedicated pros from all walks of life, from all over the world, cutting across gender, ethnic and generational divides. Second Life is a world solely made and nourished by its residents - therefore truly only their imagination can be the limit!

Kriss Lehmann is a successful landscaping artist in the online universe of Second Life. As a wise old Japanese gardener he is ever present in his serene shop situated on a floating island in the virtual ocean.
On the other side of the screen is a young Virginia native who followed his sweetheart to her native Philippines where they live just outside of the capital Manila.

Their story is one of so many who decided to follow their own path in a digital universe that is as real as you want to make it!

The Drax Files: World Makers [Episode 2: Jo Yardley]
Jo Yardley listens to Marlene Dietrich on a hand crank gramophone because she lives in Weimar era Germany and electricity is rather scarce: oh yes, although Frau Yardley lives in Amsterdam, her house is decorated with original furniture and accessories from the 1920ties and German magazines from the Interbellum Period are everywhere.
But Yardley, who is a historical consultant for film, TV and museums has done much more than opting out of microwaves, cell-phone and TV usage: inside the virtual world of Second Life, Yardley rebuilt a Berlin that is long gone, a Berlin, where ehrenwerte Damen sport cigarette-holders and gallant Herren are seen in three-piece suits rather than blue jeans.
This digital Berlin is home to the affluent who dance wide eyes shut straight through the roaring Twenties at the Hotel Adlon as well as the orphaned street children, begging for a few Mark to get through the day. 1920sBerlin in Second Life operates 24/7 and is complete with accurate signage, a functioning Zeppelin and a steam-engine Reichsbahn...so: let's take a trip back in time!

The Drax Files: World Makers [Episode 3: Eshi Otawara]
"Second Life is too beautiful a tool for us to only be used for plain simple reality" says artist and painter Eshi Otwara.
Having followed this motto for the last 7 years Eshi Otawara has been designing elaborate dresses in the virtual world that defy physical reality.
And this classically trained artist from Zagreb, Croatia, has no problems merging virtual life with her physical identity - it is all dedicated to art you can either touch, look at or...well: wear!
Wether Eshi is in her studio bringing dark dreams to life in oil, chalk or acrylic or floating high above the virtual clouds in avatar form, linking and texturing prim after prim until another unique piece of clothing emerges - Eshi embraces the expressive possibilities of both "realms" to the fullest.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 4: Fantasy Faire/RFL]
"When you come into this world and realize that how you present yourself is entirely in your hands - you presenting the best idea of yourself: there is a liberation that occurs there..." says Zander Greene, one of the organizers of Fantasy Faire in Second Life.
Designed as a fundraiser for Relay For Life the faire offers top digital content of the magical variety, handmade by SL's top designers and merchants.
A user-created universe full of ingenuity and passion: that could describe Second Life at any given day, but this long running event is certainly a prime example of how only a virtual world can truly transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.
Thousands will come together this week in order to celebrate life, humanity and free expression while at the same time battling the dark forces of a deadly disease in a way that has tangible, measurable REAL WORLD impact!

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 6: Abramelin Wolfe]
Motion capture artist Abramelin Wolfe monetizes his creativity by humanizing our virtual lives -- one fluid movement at a time. He puts his dream of an immersive future succinctly: "We want a universe that we can step into!"
Edinburgh-based Abranimations is run by the Englishman with his Scottish wife who designs colorful mesh avatars. The couple makes their living capturing performances ranging from everyday walking and communicating to 1920's flapper dances and Geisha sequences. They then sell the polished animations in their in-world store to a global userbase by way of the Linden Dollar.
But the virtual world is more about fun than it is about commerce for him, says Abramelin: "Second Life is about other people's creativity. Some of it is beautiful. Some of it is just strange...but all of it is amazing! It is like looking into their minds."
Abramelin's hectic work schedule includes expanding the business to encompass services for the emerging Scottish video game industry, but he always finds time to take long flights over the vast virtual mainland to marvel at user-created chaos and beauty. It's a digital testament to human ingenuity and the desire to exercise that muscle of imagination.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 7: Rod Humble]
"I have no idea why it's magic but it is!" says former Linden Lab CEO Rod Humble about the company's core product - the vast digital sandbox known as Second Life which has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.
With over 1 million active monthly users and annual user-to-user transactions of over 600 million US$ in virtual goods and services Second Life has outlived many prestigious game titles and once relevant social networks in a highly competitive market.
In this special episode of the Drax Files Mr. Humble theorizes on the secret to SL's longevity, marvels at the beauty of community driven markets and ponders the empowering properties of avatar-based interaction.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 8: MadPea Games]
The debate if SecondLife is a game or not is alive and well at least since on NBC's The Office [2007] Dwight Schrute rejects a narrow definition of the vast virtual world in which he "plays" a paper salesman.
Meanwhile, Finland based design company MadPea Games has not been paying much attention to this back and forth, instead churning out complex immersive adventure games and game-based learning concepts within SecondLife using the platform's vast array of tools to the fullest.
MadPea's globally dispersed team operates as if they are working out of a joint because the persistent universe of SL allows them to do just that: scripters from Holland manipulate game mechanics with 3D modelers from the United States in real-time while designers from Germany, France and the UK test game flow on their new work-in-progress action game "Unia", disproving assumptions that only consoles can handle intense game-play, high-end graphics and epic storylines.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 9: Elie Spot]
What career path will you take when your dad makes video games and your mother is a graphics designer? Of course: you most likely become a successful entrepreneur in the virtual universe of Second Life, crafting and selling high end fashion for women.
Elie Spot aka Tiffany Mitchell joined SL whilst attending college and has been a force to be reckoned with in virtual clothing design for some time.
But not only that: she runs the popular DIY blog offbeatandinspired.com and most recently became creative editor at women's business publication "Cake & Whiskey Magazine".
Could it possibly be that her experience in Second Life - creating a brand from scratch and interacting with a global customer base - has helped her to thrive and get recognition for her talents in the physical world?
Who would have thought that playing dress-up with avatars is not tons of only fun but can mean serious business as well....

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 10: Robin Sojourner]
"We are taught early on that creativity is reserved for the 'creative types' and that they are special but it just not true: all of us can do this!"
Accomplished artist Robin Sojourner is quite opinionated when it comes to creative engagement: she wants to see everyone make things, physically or digitally, because as she puts it "if you are not creating, the universe is simply missing your voice!"
Robin adds that the emphasis on succeeding more often than not dissuades children in early schooling from exploring their creative impulses, instead she proposes we learn to embrace failure as a necessary step to improve over time so we can come closer to realizing our creative vision and enjoy the process.
Needless to say that this wise woman does have no problem balancing so-called "real" life work with engagement in the virtual realm.
Enjoy and be sure to check out http://robinwood.com for more information.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 11: Dwarfins]
"I am in debt to SL for giving me an outlet. Yes, it may not be for people with a short attention span but it is perfect for creative people!"
This seems to be programmer Dante Spectre's mantra for engaging in the digital realm.
He together with his wife Judy Chestnut and artist Jaimie Hancroft created a universe within a universe: behold the realm of Dwarfins, little Lord-Of-The-Ring[ish] type beings who can replicate in a myriad of variations simply by carving magic stones.
When a Dwarfin arrives in the world of SL they do so with different skills and traits : wizards as well as peasant farmers may appear out of shiny rocks, barbarians and mighty warriors, fishermen and the odd monstrous looking misfit, they all populate and shape a fantasy role-playing community where every little details is user-created by a three-employee global micro-corporation based in Hawaii and Belgium.
Yes, immersing oneself into a fantasy world within a virtual world may not be everyone's cup of good-time tea, but it could very well be argued that the passion and persistence that drives this monetized labor of love is what we need more of in a world where most people dread their daily routines....

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 12: Ole Etzel]
"The screen is my canvas on which I paint in a digital way" says Machinima maker Ole Etzel.
The young family man from Hamburg, Germany is not bothered that most of his friends think the term "Machinima" describes a poor man's attempt at imitating Pixar or equate it with hour-long Call-Of-Duty gameplay uploaded in unedited form onto YouTube.
Ole is confident that over time people will understand that Machinima is in fact a unique and intricate art-form only limited by the artist's imagination and the customizability of the game engine that serves as the virtual Hollywood studio.
Democratizing short-film one Mr. Bones episode at a time: Ole is a man of the longview and Second Life is his world of choice!

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 13: Creations for Parkinson's]
"My avatar represents how I truly feel inside" says 86-year old Fran Seranade. And despite her Parkinson's condition she navigates her blond, blue-eyed and stunningly dressed digital alter ego with bravura through the immersive universe of Second Life: one moment she is a mermaid and another she ice skates with her friends in winter wonderland.
The effect of engaging in a virtual world on her condition is being closely studied by her personal doctor and although conclusions can't be drawn without further research, the exhilaration of being able to engage in activities like horse back riding and boating in SL suggests that so-called mirror neurons are at work here: identifying with the avatar and the action happening on the screen makes Fran's muscles feel less rigid and increases dopamine production in the brain.
"Second Life just might be the fountain of youth" Fran is saying with a smile and the in-world community "Creations for Parkinson's" run by her daughter is trying to make this statement a reality by bringing people together to celebrate the power of creativity every day, regardless of age, origin and physical location.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 14: Rose Borchovski]
"If you are a member of the art world you cannot any longer ignore immersive virtual worlds!" says Rose Borchovski and adds: "In Second Life I have a much wider audience than in a museum!".
The prolific Dutch artist - whose real life identity need'nt be revealed in these liner notes - considers herself privileged to combine her SecondLife work with physical mixed media installations she exhibits all over the world.
Still, she says, only open virtual worlds can bring about an unparalleled intensity primarily because of avatar identification: anyone can create a digital alter ego, then walk into a digital performance space at any time, surrounded by sound, images, interactive 3D objects, that are to be explored and manipulated. And all that gentle artistic "onslaught" might be accompanied by other - acquainted or random - avatar visitors who, from behind their computer screens, share and shape a unique emotional experience.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 15: Scottius]
"Second Life is, contrary to the public perception, not a place where lonely people ignore each other; it is a meeting of minds for creative folks!"
Now when a tiny otter says that, we have to take note: Austin, Texas based assemblage artist Scott Rolfe represents himself in the Metaverse via the energetic critter complete with fedora hat and shaded sunglasses and he has not longed for a humanoid avatar since 2008.
Both worlds, physical and digital, complement each other, he enthusiastically states, be it transferring recycled art pieces to the virtual realm all the while adding a bit of extra interactivity or converting 2D illustrations into giant immersive exhibits.
Scott Rolfe embraces the unique possibilities of Second Life not only by making beautiful things but also by socializing: the vibrant international arts community in SL is reminiscent of college life, says Scott - giving and receiving feedback, critiquing one another with respect, a collaborative environment that fosters free expression rather than the usual competitive winner-takes-all philosophy so prevalent in many areas of modern life.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 16: Feed A Smile]
"A child in Kenya can eat today because your avatar gave 100 Linden Dollars at this concert!"
For Brique Topaz, who runs the Germany based non-profit "Live and Learn in Kenya", a statement like the above is nothing at all out of the ordinary: little bits of virtual currency from an online world, donated by avatars who listen to musicians represented by pixels helps pay for children in impoverished slums outside of Nairobi - makes total sense!
After all: user-to-user transactions in Second Life are over 500 million US$ per year. Why not funnel some of that cash to good causes?
Should you however feel confused whenever the topic of virtual reality and its impact on the physical realm is being discussed, fear not: invest the next 5 minutes and thou shalt be enlightened, with stories of passion, persistence and really good music.

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 17: Zachh Barkley]
"The vision is in the player's hands: it is what you see and what you bring to the world!".
Zachh Barkley is a 21-year entrepreneur [and self-described magic fanatic] who easily could - like some of his peers - play video games all day and goof off killing virtual monsters.
Instead he opted to surround himself with capable collaborators at this young age, learn as much as he can about 3D modeling, scripting and marketing, all this with one goal in mind: to shape the digital world just as so many other global residents of Second Life have before him.
That bringing virtual enjoyment to thousands of avatars all over the world from his humble apartment in Madison, Wisconsin makes him a pretty penny may seem to some like magic, but at the end of the day - it is simple ingenuity & passion at work!
Enjoy a journey into a universe full of wonder and...some loud spells!

The Drax Files: World Makers [ Episode 18: Paradise Lost]
"We have forgotten how to play, how to have fun!" says Canary Beck and elaborates on why the Metaverse is the place to do just that: "Second Life is like merging Photoshop with a Holodeck" she says and her partner Harvey Crabsticks adds: "...it is a playground to experiment, where all the elements are programmable!"
And clearly: the type of immersive show the two have produced is pushing the envelope for theatrical presentation in virtual worlds, creating an exciting new precedent for what digital theatre can look and feel like.
In John Milton's "Paradise Lost", underscored by Mozart's Requiem in D Minor and enacted with avatars in 43 roles, the global audience becomes part of the story in real time as well: they are inside the ever-changing sets, experience the flood, Eve's tempting, God's wrath, they laugh, they cry and dance with the protagonists while they themselves change costumes, magically, from angels to devils and back to their true avatar identities.
And there is an even deeper connection between the Second Life experience and so-called "real" life: half of all ticket sales to Paradise lost go to The World Wildlife Fund to help support the adoption of Ihoho, a baby Rwandan Mountain Gorilla who is losing his paradise in the wild.
One thing is clear: something like this is positively not doable on Broadway!
