In any case, this article attempts to explain Japans military superiority through explaining nothing, and as for more specially train, Japan will put up what? Their self defense forces is a joke, and the Chinese armed forces is easily a match or better then the American ones, as proven in yearly military competitions held where the Chinese military comes up tops again and again, that's specially trained and hardened for you, and don't give me the BS that China haven't fought a real war, abilities are what matter in a real war, the Americans have fought a real war and lost about every one of them, the worst being in Korea and Vietnam despite having overwhelming technological advantage. I love how Peter Ford is like a little sissy hiding behind the Japanese skirt now, just be upfront and put the USA up there, Japan will be a wreckage at the end of any conventional war, and the American and Chinese economy will be turn back to the 50s, at the end of the day, it's about who will outlast the other, and you can bet with near certainty that China having gone through 120 years of revolutions and two major wars, upheavals, that resulted in over 40 million deaths will outlast anyone, which is why they have nearly 5000 years of recorded history. When asked about the dinosaurs today, the cockroaches laugh in their face :)

If it is a short military conflict over the islands, China does not have advantages; however, if it escalates into a broader and longer war, China does. Military strength is always commensurable to economic power. China fought the US to a tie in Korean war in early 1950s when its economic output was 3% that of US and steel production 1% that of US and food production 20% that of US. Today its GDP is 70%, steel production 8 times that of US, food production equals US and India combined. If it has taken more than a decade without being able to achieve military objective in Iraq and Afghan war for the US, one should pause and think...what would be the outcome of a war with a nuclear powered country like China.

This article is clueless.
Japan in its current state is no match for China in an all out war without US help. Not even close. Japan has no significant weapons system on a scale to deal with China's size and all of its systems are of limited range. It has no missiles that can reach China while China has enough to wipe Japan off the map.
By many accounts China is just 20 years behind US but catching up fast. Japan's best weapons are all old systems from US. But very little is newer than 20 years. US has yet to sell them any new weapons such as F22, F35, new warships etc.
In addition, Japan as an island with little resources is very difficult to defend, as evident in WW2.

很多数据显示中国只落后美国20年，但是中国追赶的很快。日本最好的武器都是美国的老旧装备，但也有极少部分是近20年的新式武器。美国还没向日本出售任何最新式武器，例如f22，f35和新式军舰等等。
再说一句，日本是个资源贫乏的岛屿，非常难于防守，二战时已经证明了这点。

I think China will be very pleased that the West think about China this way. Those of us that actually follows military hardware from US, China and Japan for the past 20 years knows the real military balance.
But yes, guys please think China is very very weak, so why don't you go try to invade it, I'm sure you will win, I"m sure China will be a push over like they were in the 1880s when the 8 nation alliance burned down the Chinese imperial palace.

Anyone that knows history knows that Japan is historically the belligerent nation. Way before WW2 all the way back to the 1500's they were trying to invade Korea and China. Only with their utter defeat by the US they have bowed and if you allow the Japanese to become fully nuclear and militarized they'll stop taking US orders. China on the other hand in their 2,000+ years of history mainly fought themselves certain kingdoms invaded other nations but China for a long time was not 1 nation. In modern times they've had short term invasions into Vietnam and in Korea to fight the US..even against the Soviets. Most of their conflicts have been over territorial disputes.

China, in over 4000 years, have the unique distinction among the great civilizations of the world of having lost every war they ever participated in (it got so big by demographically swallowing every annexing conqueror and warlord).
(Technically, they were on the winning side of WWII, but even on the day Japan surrendered, more of China was under Japanese occupation than all of Japan.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It is amazing how ignorant people become by only reading Yahoo news articles and then not reading deeper into these themes. As a scholar, I have been saying it for years, that Japan's military is stronger than the Chinese military. Why do you think the Chinese have not really gone and just set up on these islands? Of course there is the deterrent of the United States, but even without the US, Japan could handle China. While China has the manpower, technology renders them obsolete. All it means is the Chinese hordes gather together and make an easy target for the Japs. And this is while Japan is only in "self-defense" mode, although I doubt that's the reality underneath. If Japan becomes militant even a little bit again, they will become quite powerful and China may never have the capability to spar with them. Who knows? Another Nanjing massacre in the future? The Japanese just completely overran the Chinese in WWII, and they could probably do it again. They may be a few years ahead of the Chinese militarily, but they are centuries ahead of them intellectually.

The Japanese most certainly did not over run the Chinese in World War II, in fact their war against the Chinese was a massive failure in spite of their having even greater technological and organizational skills at that time. Their massive superiority in these skills led them into a terrible morass that undermined the advantages they had. China has improved tremendously in their internal structure and have still access to the resources that Japanese needed so badly to expand their nation into a leading first world nation. They could have likely done it had they kept out of China, not attacked the USA and moved into South East Asia replacing the European colonial powers who were so busy with Germany at the time. They were unfortunately spread far too thin with their China adventure to withdraw and were equally worried about the Soviet Union. They made several bad strategic moves that that time, but today China is ever more of a threat than at that time. Diplomacy would have been the answer then, would be a better approach now. For both sides.
