Francis Roig : “Nadal has no chance against Djokovic if he plays to speculate”

Francis Roig (Barcelona, Spain, 1968) did everything in Doha because besides accompanying Rafael Nadal in his first tournament of the season, which he eventually ended winning, he played doubles with the world number one and even won a match. The coach, who accompanies Nadal for 12 calendar weeks, analyzes the state of the Spaniard in this talk with TENNISTOPIC before his [Rafa's] debut in the first Grand Slam of the season.

Response. I was a little nervous at first (laughs). Rafa said, ‘Hey, do we ask for a wildcard to play?’. I replied that I had jut one racket and it was not even prepared, but we decided to play. At the end of the first match I had a little strain in the soleus, which dragged in the second match, but I was able to play better than I thought. It is always a positive and fun experience to play with Rafa.

Q. The victory in Doha leaves Nadal in 18 tournaments played, 15 titles and 11 finals since his returning in February.

A. It is something that seems impossible. Obviously, nobody expected it, but I honestly thought it would not take him too much to be back. Not returning to these levels, of course, but I was convinced that he would reach the level given how good tennis player he is. But not in this way.
答：看起来好像是不可能的事。很显然，没人能预料到这些，但老实说我觉得豆子复出并不是什么困难的事，当然，不是说回到现在的水平，但我坚信他能做到，因为他是这么优秀的球员。但没想到豆子以这种方式回归。
Q. There are two revealing data of his return: 24-5 against the top ten and 17-1 and when disputing the deciding set. Which one do you prefer?

A. We should see this 17-1 in detail because I think it is very important the winner of the first set in the best of three matches. Normally, whoever wins the first set is the one in better shape, unless you have been careless at the beginning. If the start is more or less good, the winner of the first set is the one that’s fitter. Afterwards there can be relaxation or extra motivation because you’ve lost, but usually who ends up winning is the one playing better.

A. Then it has even more merit. But you know that Rafa is a bit out of the ordinary in these things.

Q. What surprised you most in this return?

A. In summer he played unbelievable [Montreal, Cincinnati and U.S. Open, where he was proclaimed the winner of the three tournaments], as ever on hard courts. He played better during the summer than in Indian Wells, but there he always feels very comfortable and although the court is not very fast, the ball flies and bounces pretty much. And in Acapulco he also impressed me because he was not at 100% physically and he played at a very high level of tennis.
答：去年夏天他打出了不可思议的比赛（蒙特利尔，辛辛那提，美网，三站都拿了冠军），这在硬地上是没有过的。他在夏天打得比印第安维尔斯要好，但在印第安维尔斯豆子总是感觉很舒服，尽管场地不是很快，球却是各种乱飞乱跳。在墨西哥站他也让我很惊讶，因为那时他还没有100％恢复，却已经打出很高的水准。
