Awards season brings with it a seemingly endless series of rubber chicken (or beef) dinners, copious amounts of wine and verbose acceptance speeches from the many events with major A-listers in attendance.
One of the nation's key groups, the New York Film Critics Circle, hosted its gala on Monday night at the Edison Ballroom. Winners had been announced ahead of time, so suspense wasn't an issue. And it's possibly the only night of the year when filmmakers and actors can pretend to be friends with the often-cranky critics who often bash their performances.
As the race to the Oscars gathers steam, winners including Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and David O. Russell rubbed elbows and feted one another, days after the season's first winter storm slammed into Manhattan.
"I live in Australia. My husband is about to open a play. It's great. I'm so chuffed to be here," Blanchett said during the pre-dinner cocktail hour. "To come back here is so delightful."
And there were a few sweet star encounters. "I love your work. It's beautiful, beautiful,"Fruitvale Station's Octavia Spencer told Blanchett after running into her during cocktail hour.
As for her film itself, it meant the world to Spencer, who won an Oscar for The Help. Does everyone have to treat her with kid gloves these days? "Well, that was the case well before I won the Oscar. That was in the memo," she jokes. "I don't take it for granted at all."
Neither does Blanchett. "I'm pounding the sidewalk," she quips. "It's nice to be freelance again."
Leto brought his mom as his date and gave her a big mention during his acceptance speech, lauding her for giving him and his brother a better life.
Before the dinner, however, he was funny and relaxed. "I'm on team avocado right now. I've been in Mexico," said Leto, of his awards fitness regimen. "I gained 60 pounds once for a role and I know what it's like to have another person on your body."
He lost copious amounts of weight to play Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. "What I hope stays with me is her stance of compassion and humor," said Leto, who otherwise fronts the band 30 Seconds to Mars. "We're on tour. We're on the road together. Everyone is really happy for me."
And best actor winner Redford, who was introduced by Glenn Close, was charmingly low key, telling us that when he lived in New York, he made his kids walk to school. His idea of an acceptance speech? Brevity. "Thank you," said Redford. "It's an honor to be here. These critics can be tough. I wish for once they would give the awards before people ate."
This way, said Redford, you could be more relaxed. Point taken.

Best Foreign Language Film: Blue is the Warmest Color
Best Nonfiction Film: Stories We Tell
Best First Film: Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale Station
