Danielle Bradbery shot to stardom and clinched the "The Voice" crown with her soaring voice and sweet personality. But the young singer had other aspirations when she was growing up in Cypress.
"I wanted to be a drummer, which was weird because I was a very tiny blond girl," Bradbery says. "I got a big set of drums for Christmas when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Every time there was a song with a drum solo, I'd get so excited.
"I still think about doing it. Who would expect a 17-year-old blondie to just stop what she's doing and do a drum solo onstage? Hopefully, it'll happen one day."
Given Bradbery's track record, that could be soon. Her first single, "The Heart of Dixie," hit radio less than two months after her Season 4 "Voice" win and became a Top 20 country hit. She's the show's youngest winner to date.
Her self-titled debut album was released Nov. 25 and ably balances big-voiced ballads, youthful midtempos and feel-good sentiment. She also made her Grand Ole Opry debut last month and recently wrapped an opening slot on Brad Paisley's arena tour.
"'The Voice,' I think, prepared me big time for what's going on now," she says. Indeed, Bradbery excelled on renditions of big hits from Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans and Pam Tillis during her TV run. Those influences are all funneled into her original material.

Bradbery returns home this week for the Mayor's Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting (and maybe some drumming practice).
Q: What was most important to you with this album?
A: I made sure that every song had some meaning to it. I didn't want my songs to sound like everything else (on the radio). When people hear it, I want them to say, 'That's Danielle Bradbery.' I think every song on my album has its own personality. I'm really excited to see what everybody's opinions are on it. I'm not a writer yet, but I got the opportunity to get the songs handed over to me and pick them as my own. I tried to take some inspirational songs, some fun songs that people might relate to. I just want people to get something out of it.
Q: Did you consider the balance of young fans and more mature listeners you picked up thanks to your "Voice" performances?
A: Of course I have a little bit of thought into that. I tried to pick my songs for everybody, all ages, to listen to. I hope that everybody can just put it on and like it, basically. My dad really loves the song called "Daughter of a Workin' Man." I kind of thought of my dad when I heard it. I thought it would be really cool to have that on my record. My family can't even believe that I have an album in the first place. It's all so crazy but so exciting.
Q: Are any of the new songs particularly special to you?
A: "My Day" and "Never Like This" are the two that I can really relate to (in terms of) what's going on now that has never happened to me before. They also remind me of the whole "Voice" experience. When I sing those songs, I feel them.
Q: You've often cited Carrie Underwood, another TV success story, as an inspiration. Have you gotten to meet her yet?
A: I haven't gotten to meet Carrie yet. Hopefully, soon. I look up to Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift a lot. I got to meet Taylor Swift, and just sitting there talking to her, it's so amazing what she's been through and what she went through to get to where she is now.
Q: Any nerves singing for stadiums full of fans on the Brad Paisley tour?
A: It is a big crowd, but I don't get as nervous as being in front of a little crowd. You see everybody's face and their facial expressions in a little group. That just makes me really nervous. Big crowds are so much fun. You just get this adrenaline. It's been really, really fun. And Brad is really sweet.
Q: How do you keep up with the schedule?
A: If I get enough sleep, then I'm ready to go. Every now and then, they try to get me home for a weekend. I go to my grandma's house. I hang out with my cousin and my best friend. I have time to sit back for a little bit and rest. If I have the opportunity to sleep in, I take it.
Q: "The Voice," a hit single, a new album - what's the next big goal?
A: My goal is to perform at RodeoHouston. I was always at the rodeo every year and went to mostly every concert. I always saw Brad Paisley, and it's really cool now that I think about it and I'm on his tour. I saw Blake (Shelton), Lady Antebellum. And I always loved the bull riding and the roping before the performance. Every time I went to a concert, I would look down and be, like, "I just cannot wait until I get to be right there."
