"Northcliffe Surf Club has named a new surf boat after former Nipper and pop sensation Cody Simpson"
As Cody Simpson walked out on the deck of the Surfers Paradise Surf Club on Saturday, the wind picked up and blew the cover off a surprise waiting for him on the beach.
There lay a new youth development boat, with Cody’s name splashed on the side.
The former Northcliffe Nipper turned heart-throb singer gasped, putting his hand over his mouth. “I thought I was just getting a plaque or something,” he said. “This is sick.”
Despite moving to the United States with his family three years ago to pursue his music career, Simpson said he never forgets his Gold Coast home.
The 16-year-old took time out of his busy schedule to play a live acoustic gig at the Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club following his Australian support of Justin Bieber, raising more than $10,000 for new club equipment earlier this month.
The money from the sold-out gig was used to purchase a new youth development boat, officially named Cody on Saturday.
"It was so cool to be able to play at my old surf club and raise the funds for them to be able to do this," he said.
"I really didn’t expect a boat to be named after me though. My friends just kept saying we needed to go to the surf club for something, and I had no clue why, but this is really cool.
"Nippers was such a big part of my childhood weekends, I loved swimming and I did the comps.
"I’m really honoured to be able to leave some kind of memento at my old club in my hometown. It’s kind of like I’m still here in spirit," he laughed.
Simpson’s last album Surfers Paradise also reflects his love for the area, with songs that speak of the beach, summer and love.
"It’s an ode to here. I love being back and just hitting the beach with my girlfriend and mates. I like to surf where I live in southern California but we have to wear steamers (wet suits) all year round.
"We’re having a summer Christmas with relatives here then heading back to the States in time for New Year’s (Eve) and then straight into rehearsals for my upcoming acoustic tour of the US and Canada. I’ll also be working on a new album and really focusing on my craft. I’m looking forward to it."
