一个时代的结束？
尽管是著名演员MaggieSmith和RobertStephens的儿子，TobyStephens却不想自己三个孩子中的任何一个进入演艺界。
“我不希望，”他告诉我说。
“我从不把自己看作什么演艺世家的一部分。它从我父母那里开始——但是在他们之后没有人。
对我的孩子们来说，我想让他们做自己想做的事。我不会阻止他们干这行（表演），但是我会，一定会，让他们考虑清楚这是否是适合他们的。演艺界是个非常残酷的产业，我想将来也不会有任何改变。”
Stephens演过邦德电影《择日再死》，他和女演员Anna-Louise Plowman结婚。“裙带关系在这行里不起作用，因为你行就是行，不行就是不行，”他加上说。“如果你不行，没人会给你工作。可不管你父母是谁。”

Endof an era?
Despite being the son of the illustrious actors Dame Maggie Smith and SirRobert Stephens, Toby Stephens does not want any of his three children to entershowbusiness.
“I hope not,” he tells me.
“I don’t see myself as part of any dynasty. It started with my mum and dad –there was no one behind them.
“With my kids, I want them to do what they want. I won’t stop them from doingit [acting], but I would, certainly, want them to consider whether it is theright thing for them. It is such a hard industry to be in, and I don’t think itis getting any easier.”
Stephens, who appeared in the James Bond film Die Another Day, is married tothe actress Anna-Louise Plowman. “Nepotism doesn’t work in this industry,because you can either do it or you can’t,” he adds. “If you can’t, no one isgoing to give you a job. It doesn’t matter who your parents are.”

这么个遗传基因，下一代再入行的可能性还是很大的。

托妈当初也不想让自己的两个儿子入这行，但后来两个儿子都做了演员，其实我少少觉得托妈还是希望起码有个儿子能子承父母业的。不过Toby我想是确实不想让子女做这个的，这行中的辛酸恐怕还是不足为外人道。特别是对他这种被父母光环影响的人来说，父母带来的影响不但帮不到他，反而可能会让别人看他的时候带着某种偏见。最常见的是他的表演常常被拿来和他父母的相比较，这也是他执意不肯与母亲同台演出的原因吧。而人们心中固有的成见是难以根除的，演得好了人家会说是父母遗传得好，演得不好会被人家说怎么没遗传到父母的基因。我想Toby说不想让孩子们做这行也是不想让自己的子女活在老一辈的阴影下吧。
