For Toshiba, the device is critical if it is to be successful in beating Sony and the Blu-ray promoters. A senior Toshiba executive in Singapore told SmartHouse that: "An Xbox with a built in HD DVD drive is critical. They and we are working on it. It also has to be more than a gaming machine. Microsoft recognise this. A version of the device may also be sold under the Toshiba brand name." The new Xbox device [is reported to] include: extensive wireless networking, 1080p playback, a dual HDTV tuner, EPG capability, an open standard docking port similar to the 17 pin iPod port for an MP3 player, and a new open standard chassis system that allows an Xbox to be slotted into a HDTV screen over 40-inch and allow hard drives to be upgraded and expanded similar to the way that users can upgrade the hard drive on a PC. The new device is expected to be released late in 2008 or at the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas

[XBOX360]东芝：HD-DVD内藏版全新xbox360开发中。曾经率先披露微软使用劣质零部件导致xbox360主机三红的澳大利亚技术网站smarthouse，日前在采访中得知，微软现在正在计划开发一台全新的xbox360，与以往不同的是，这款主机将会内建HD-dvd驱动器，以便让xbox360和hd-dvd能够在与PS3与蓝光的竞争中取得胜利。根据调查显示，在澳大利亚、英、法、德、西等西方市场上，消费者选择PS3的一个主要原因就是PS3搭载有蓝光功能。而最近GFK的一份研究结果显示，xbox360的外置hd-dvd播放器在市场上根本就是乏人问津。而且为了提前推出xbox360，微软不得不将预计中的hdmi端口削减掉以节约成本，虽然他在最近的Elite中提供了这个功能。在接收SmartHouse采访时，新加坡东芝公司官员表示，xbox在次世代dvd之战中地位非常关键，微软与东芝很清楚这意味着什么。xbox360不能仅仅着眼于游戏市场上的胜利。而微软也间接地承认，一款新的xbox360主机将有可能会以Toshiba的商标推出，就像当年的3DO授权给三洋那样。在计划中，这款主机将全面向Playstation3主机看齐，提供无线连接功能，原生1080P，dual HD TV tuner、EPG(Electronic Program Guide）机能、类似ipod一样的通用接口。此外，这款xbox360的硬盘将会像PC一样可以方便地自行升级，并且采用笔记本电脑的低音技术以确保运行时声音不会过大，并且微软还期待通过全新的设计来降低xbox360那可怕的故障率（据调查，PS3的故障率不到2%，xbox360的故障率则高达30%）。对于东芝公司来说，这款产品在与sony公司与蓝光阵营的竞争中至关重要。而澳大利亚第二大消费电子产品零售商JB HiFi的行销主管Scott Browning也表示：“The device is a lay down mis`ere and essential for the HD DVD camp. We are told that one is coming. The PS3 has been extremely successful for Sony in getting Blu-ray off the ground and for Microsoft, the omission of a built in HD DVD player is set to hurt sales going forward as consumers are aware that the PS3 comes with a Blu-ray player." 据悉，新的主机将会在2008年底或者2009年在拉斯维加斯召开的CES 2009上予以公开。
