The Inside Edge: Skaters infiltrate Oscar night
Rippon, Wagner walk the red carpet; Weir, Lipinski critique fashion
Posted3/5/14by Sarah S. Brannen and Drew Meekins, special to icenetwork
The glamour-fest that is the Academy Awards had a little extra sparkle this year, due to the presence of several figure skaters. Ashley Wagner and Adam Rippon attended the ceremony, while Meryl Davis, Charlie White and Gracie Gold graced some of the afterparties. Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir worked the red carpet for Access Hollywood and the TODAY show.
Wagner shined in a gold Marc Bouwer dress provided by Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills. She chose the dress, from 10 possibilities, right after taping The Arsenio Hall Show. Wagner accessorized with a Pandora bracelet, earrings and ring, and wore Cover Girl Hot Passion lipstick and Bombshell mascara.
Rippon provided a sophisticated escort in his own Vera Wang tuxedo. We asked if he had any accessories.
"Just Ashley!" he said. "Because we couldn't win an Oscar, we dressed like one. I thought we were winners. We got kind of friendly with Naomi Watts right before we went through security. They wanted to know where Ashley's medal was, so I said it was hidden in her hair."
It was the first time at the Oscars for both Wagner and Rippon, and it fully lived up to their expectations.
"Walking the red carpet was kind of a surreal and exciting experience," Rippon said. "We're both so lucky we got the chance to go."
"It was incredible!" Wagner said. "We had amazing seats. It was more of an intimate venue than I expected. You were really rubbing elbows with everyone. Ellen DeGeneres was so funny. Just to be in that type of an environment was really cool. It was fun to live the fairy tale for the night."
Wagner and Rippon were surprised by how small the theater was, having expected something along the lines of the big arenas in which they routinely perform.
"It was really intimate -- I wasn't expecting that," said Rippon. "All the actors were among their peers, and there was a lot of camaraderie between them. It was also very cool that Ellen tried to make it social-media friendly, so everyone could share in the experience, whether they were there or watching at home."
After the ceremony, Wagner and Rippon headed to the Governor's Ball, which Wagner said was the highlight of her night.
"We got to see John Legend perform, and he sounded incredible," she said. "We got to walk around and mingle. We walked right by Meryl Streep, we saw Cate Blanchett. Brad Pitt looks amazing in person."
"We saw someone get in a fight with Bette Midler to take a picture with the Oscar," Rippon added.
As they are still dedicated athletes, Wagner and Rippon were on the ice training the next morning.

Fashion police Weir and Lipinski dished on red carpet fashion on TODAY the morning after the show, and then appeared on Access Hollywood that afternoon. They swooned over Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior and Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé, awarding "medals" to their favorite looks.
The dynamic duo dressed in matching white for the red carpet, Lipinski in a Rani Zakhem gown and Weir in a Kymerah tailed white jacket and sparkly silver Louis Leeman shoes.
"The best part about being at the Oscars is the electric energy around L.A. this time of year," Weir told us. "I've been to Oscar events before, but this one was so special because I was able to combine my love of fashion with my love of broadcasting. It's so cool that my opinion on fashion is respected and I had the opportunity to report for Access Hollywood. Working with Tara Lipinski is a dream, and I was happy we could enjoy the event together."
After the red carpet duty, Weir and Lipinski skipped the ceremony and watched on TV from their hotel room while they put together their looks for the Elton John AIDS Foundation party, switching from angelic white to demonic black. Weir wore an Yves Saint Laurent vest, Tom Ford leather pants with an oversize zipper and a chunky gold chain necklace, while Lipinski donned a beaded black Marchesa gown.
Also at the Elton John fiesta, and the Vanity Fair party, were Meryl Davis and Charlie White, elegant in Ralph Lauren. (White sported a freshly shorn coif to match his tux.) Plenty of stars wanted to pose with the shiny new Olympic champions and their gold medals, including Stevie Nicks, Josh Groban, Bill Murray, Steven Tyler and Andy Serkis.
"Hashtag we're not worthy," Charlie tweeted, just like that. (We love it that he always spells out "hashtag.")
Two days after the Oscars, White and Davis were on Good Morning America, as their participation in Dancing With the Stars was announced.
Gracie Gold and her twin, Carly, glammed it up at the In Style Oscar-watching party.
As for the skaters who weren't at the Oscars, they were busy watching the broadcast and tweeting; Alex Shibutani photoshopped himself into Ellen's most-tweeted-in-history selfie.
The color of the night was definitely a light, embroidered one: white jackets, white gowns and lots of ivory, silver, platinum, pale gold and pale pink dresses covered with lace and spangles.
Will next season's skating costumes reflect this trend?
"For the boys, I'm glad white is now trending," Weir said. "It's such a good, pure and chic statement."
