The Norwegian battalion defended with extraordinary bravery and was
able to seal off and clear every penetration. The Soviets evidently feared
their battle cry—Norge—and the Nordic soldiers were able to eject all enemy
intrusions. One example will perhaps serve to illustrate the élan of those
men: An SS-Oberscharführer of the battalion, who had already lost one arm
and, despite that, reported back for frontline service, was shot through the
mouth during the fighting within the estate. Since he could not speak, he
wrote on the door of the room where the wounded were being treated: “Am
I going to die?” Dr. Kalbskopf calmed his patient: “If you keep your mouth
closed, perhaps not!”
