CHN - Li Meng happy for her breakthrough to senior ranks
BANGKOK, Thailand (25th FIBA Asia Championship for Women): In a team that has more half the roster less than 25 years of age, it’s quite normal that one would have missed the most resourceful teenager to come out of China in recent times – Li Meng.
The cherubic youngster with a naughty smile that is as resplendent as her exemplary prowess on the field. From the days of emerging as the MVP at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in France, Li Meng has grown in size as well as stature.
“I have a long way to go yet,” she said with a glint of the teenage mischief twinkling in her eyes.
“I’m proud to have made it to this team and play for the China National Team. But I know I am far from reaching my best yet,” she added.
Conversation swirled around her achievements in the age group competitions.
“Those days were real fun,” she said. “But they are over. I am no longer just a youngster. Now I am a member of the Chinese National Team. So I need to play much better than earlier and work harder than before.”
Li Meng has indeed got her time on the court with coach Tom Maher giving her substantial opportunity especially in games against India and Kazakhstan, but then – as the coach himself puts it – in a team that has yet to settle down fully, she couldn’t have asked for more.
“I’m quite thrilled for all the time that I have got to play. It doesn’t matter against which team and for how long.
“I am also getting to play in a position that I am more comfortable in,” said Li Meng, who in this competition has been used more as a shooting guard than the small forward that she has been in the past.
“I want to be able to play point guard one day. That’s my ambition,” she signed off.I
