Australia coach Josh Eagle has confirmed the Canberra teenager will be included in a five-man squad to play Poland in Warsaw next month.
Eagle said Kyrgios' big match mentality and ability to thrive under pressure has him in contention to play a singles rubber.
Fairfax Media understands Kyrgios is under heavy consideration to play on the opening day to ease the pressure on ageing warrior Lleyton Hewitt.
The 18-year-old will fine-tune his preparations by playing world No.4 David Ferrer in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday morning.
It caps a remarkable rise for Kyrgios, who was the Davis Cup side's orange boy for its successful tie against China last year.
Australia must beat Poland on clay to rejoin the World Group, and a strong performance against Ferrer will boost Kyrgios' hopes. He will battle Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and Bernard Tomic for a singles spot, with Chris Guccione to play doubles.
“He's been named in a five-man squad, he's absolutely a chance of playing against Poland,” Eagle said from New York.
“A good result here certainly can't harm his chances. This is what we want and expect from him, because the kid's got game.”
The squad will hold a week-long training camp on clay courts in Germany after the US Open.
Kyrgios proved he can thrive on the surface with a straight sets first-round victory over former world No.8 Radek Stepanek at the French Open this year.
“Every time he's stepped up at grand slam senior level he's showed a sense of belonging which most young players don't have,” he said. “He seems to thrive in these occasions, that's really promising. Nick's in with a huge chance and we see him as a big part of the future of Australian tennis.”
Poland's campaign will be spearheaded by Jerzy Janowicz and Lukasz Kubot.

不过现在看来年龄更小的加林要承担的压力会更大一些，因为智利现在真的是“朝中无人”了。冈萨雷斯去年三月退役，马苏就在上个星期宣布退役，今年的法网青少组男单冠军目前基本已经被当做队内的二号或者三号来使用。在四月的美洲区第二轮比赛中他一人丢了两分导致智利爆冷输给厄瓜多尔无缘世界组附加赛，失去了和瑞士队拼一下的希望。
