NBC高管及该节目的教练组、制片人指出，该节目的目的不是为了寻找或培养歌唱明星，因此指责该节目「至今没有诞生一位巨星」是没有道理的。其言下之意是说，造星是《美国偶像》的专利，「我们不搞那么肤浅的事情」，「We do it because we love music.」
Adam Levine对该节目不能「造星」的解释是：「It would be really nice if we were to launch a new star. A lot of things have to happen in order for that to take place. The goal of the show is to do what we can do with these amazing singers while they’re on the show to get somebody into the front to win the show. We all know that the lightning in a bottle that you have to capture in order to be successful in the business is extremely difficult.」
