Frank Ocean, the main headliner for this weekend's Splendour in the Grass music festival, has cancelled his Australian tour because of an apparently career-threatening vocal cord injury.
Promoter Live Nation posted a message on its Twitter feed about 4pm this afternoon confirming the cancellation.
Ocean played the first of two Melbourne shows last night at Festival Hall, during which he repeatedly apologised for having a cold.
Ocean was scheduled to play again tonight at Festival Hall, then at Splendour on Sunday night at Byron Bay, followed by two shows at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion on Monday and Tuesday nights. But all remaining gigs on this tour have been cancelled.Advertisement
"It has been confirmed that Ocean has suffered a small tear to one of his vocal cords and has received medical advice that he must rest his voice," Live Nation and Niche Productions said in a statement. "This makes completion of his remaining Australian dates impossible."
A spokesperson from Splendour in the Grass said it was "devastating news" for the event.
"We are absolutely devastated," the spokesperson said. "We are totally gutted that Frank can't make it and we know that many of our patrons will be just as disappointed as we are."
The medical advice he received was that permanent damage could occur if he continued to sing, according to the festival spokesperson.
Patrons who booked tickets for the Sydney and Melbourne only shows, either online or by phone, using a credit card will be automatically refunded. Those who purchased tickets from an outlet are being advised that they will need to return to the outlet to apply for a refund.
It is unlikely, however, that Splendour tickets will be refunded since there are more than 70 acts at the festival, despite Ocean being the closing act of the weekend event.
