Graeme Dott believes a summer away from the practice table will pay off in the new season after revealing he was "mentally drained" when his world title defence ended in the first round. The Scot's dream of finishing last season as world number one were shattered when he crashed out to Ian McCulloch at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre in April. And, apart from a couple of days earlier in the summer, he has not picked up his cue since returning from South Yorkshire to his Larkhall home.Dott starts his season next week at the Shanghai Masters, and jets out to China on Friday fully expecting a first-round defeat to Michael Holt. But when he returns Dott has vowed to return to his familiar daily practice routine, and has his sights set on the Royal London Watches Grand Prix which again takes place in Aberdeen this October.Fresh from a sun break in Orlando, Dott told PA Sport: "I had such a long season last year that I needed a rest. I haven't played much recently so I'll be arriving in China with low expectations."I might be considered as one of the men to beat now, but Michael probably think he's in for a harder game than he is."I needed to take a break. To prepare properly for this week would have meant starting in June."But I've not really played at all since the World Championships. I only practised for a couple of days before an exhibition event in Holland, but that's been it."Dott insists he has not lost his love for the game."It was nothing to do with that, I just needed a rest," he said."I was mentally drained and needed to have a break."I know I'll get the benefit of taking my break later in the season."The 30-year-old 2006 world champion has set himself a modest target for the new season, hoping to maintain a record of winning one title per year.He has achieved that goal in each of the past couple of seasons, and would be thrilled if the next title came in front of a Scottish crowd in Aberdeen."It would be great," he said."You want to win any tournament but it would be special in front of home fans."Hopefully I can have a good run."The Grand Prix takes place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from October 13-21.Dott added: "You want to win every tournament you enter but realistically it's not going to happen. I'd be happy just to win one."If you keep getting to the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the world ranking should take care of itself."
