The two men moved to the other side of the road, where the light from the residential area is blocked by the roadbed. In the darkness, Luo and Shi fumbled for a while, and finally sat on the sand.
“Let’s start.” Luo’s voice sounded in the dark.
“Keep it simple. I’m not as smart as you. If it’s too complicated, I wouldn’t be able to understand it.”
“Everyone could understand it, Shi. The truth is simple, that’s what it is. It makes you feel absurd that it is impossible for you to not be able to discover it. Do you know the Mathematical axioms?”
“I learned it from the middle school geometry. It’s something obvious like ‘you can only draw one straight line between two points.’”
“Right. Now let’s set two axioms for the cosmic civilizations: first, existence is the prime need of a civilization; second, civilizations keep growing and extending, but the amount of resources in the universe keeps constant.”
“What’s more?”
“Nothing more.”
“What can you derive with merely these things?”
“Shi, you can reestablish the scenario from merely one bullet or one drop of blood. Then we can also describe the prospect of all cosmic civilizations in Cosmo-Sociology using merely these two axioms. This is science; the cornerstones of each system are just that simple.”
“Then let me see how you do it.”
“Well, let’s put the matter of The Dark Battle aside. Do you believe it, if I say that the Starship-Earth is the miniature of the cosmic civilizations?”
“That’s not right, is it? The Starship-Earth lacks fuels and accessories, but the universe doesn’t. The universe is way too big.”
“You are wrong. The universe is big, but life is even bigger. This is what the second axiom says. The resources in the universe keep constant, but lives grow exponentially. Exponent is a Mathematical evil. If there were a bacterium in the sea, which would divide once per half hour, then in the circumstance that there is enough nourishment, the sea would be filled by the prosperity of that bacterium in a few days. The human and Three-Body civilizations may delude you, that civilizations are small. They are small, indeed, but they are only at the infancy as cosmic civilizations. However, once the technology of one civilization exceeds some threshold, the extension speed of lives in the universe is horrifying. For example, by the current starship speed, the human civilization could fill the entire Milky Way in one million years. One million years, it is just a moment in cosmic scale.”
“So you are saying, in long run, the entire universe would be in the situation of, how do they call it, a survival impasse?”
“You don’t need to see it in long run. The universe is already a survival impasse. Like what Heowns said, probably civilizations have appeared for billions of years. There are signs telling us, that maybe the universe has already been filled up. Nobody knows how many spaces and resources are still available in the Milky Way, and in the universe.”
“But it’s no right either, is it? It seems like the universe is completely empty. We didn’t see any other extraterrestrial lives except the Three-Body.”
“This is what we are going to talk about. Give me a cigarette.” Luo fumbled a long time before he got the cigarette from Shi. When Luo talked again, Shi noticed that Luo had changed his location, and sat about three meters away from him. “We shall keep some distance, to make it feel more like we are in the space.” Luo said, and then he ignited his cigarette. Shi ignited one, too. In the darkness, the only thing could be seen were the two glimmers.
“Okay, to explain this question easily, we have to construct a simplest model of cosmic civilizations. Let’s assume, these two glimmers are two civilizations’ planets. There’s nothing more than that. You have to ignore everything around them. Do you get the feeling?”
“Yes, it is easy to get this feeling in places dark like here.”
“Now let’s call these civilizations ‘Your Civilization’ and ‘My Civilization’. These two worlds are very far away from each other, let’s say a hundred light-years. You have detected my existence, but you don’t know anything else about me. I, however, have not yet detected your existence at all.”
“Okay.”
“Then we have to define to concepts: virtue and vice between civilizations. In science, these two word, virtue and vice, are not rigorous. Therefore their meaning should be limited: virtue means the civilization does not attack or eliminate other civilizations, and vice versa for vice.”
“Well, that’s the lowest level of virtue I guess.”
“You have detected my existence. Then, what actions could you take? When you consider this question, please always remember the cosmic civilization axioms, as well as the environment and distance scale in the space.”
“What if I choose to communicate with you?”
“If you do that, you have to realize the price of it: you will expose you existence.”
“Yes, it’s not trivial in the universe.”
“There are different kinds of expose according to the extent: the strongest expose is letting me know you precise coordination; next level is letting me know your approximate direction; the weakest expose is just letting me know your existence hence letting me start the search and finally find you. If you can detect my existence, then there is no reason that I can’t detect yours. Consider the development of technology, it’s just about time.”

“But bro, I can take a little risk to communicate with you. If you are vice, then it’s my bad luck; if you are virtue, however, then we can have further communications, and finally become a larger virtue civilization.”
“Okay Shi, here we are at the key point. Let’s get back to the Cosmo-Sociology axioms. Even if I am a virtue civilization, could I assume that you are also virtue and the very beginning of the communication?”
“Of course not, this would disobey the first axiom.”
“Then what should I do, if I received your message?”
“You have to make you judgment indeed, that if I am virtue or vice. If I am vice, then you eliminate me; if I am virtue, then we continue our communication.”
The glimmer on Luo’s side raised and started to move over. It is obvious that Luo stood up and began to trot, “It is feasible on the Earth, but not in the universe. Let me introduce an important concept: The Suspicion Chain.”
“That’s a strange phrase.”
“That’s the only thing I got at the beginning. She didn’t explain, but at last I understood this concept from what it means literally.”
“She, who is she?”
“I will talk about that later. Let’s continue. Thinking I am virtue, that’s not the reason you can feel safe, because according to the first axiom, a virtue civilization could never regard other civilizations as virtue. Thus, you don’t know how I am thinking about you, namely you don’t know if I am thinking you as virtue or vice. Hence, even if you assume that I regard you as virtue, and I know that you think I am virtue, I still don’t know your opinion about how I am thinking about you thinking about me. Isn’t that too dizzy? This is only the third level. This logic would not stop here, it will continue forever.”
“I understand what you mean.”
“This is the Suspicion Chain. You would not see this on the Earth. Human beings are mutual species, which bear very similar cultural characteristics within a co-dependent and short-distant biome. In that certain environment, the Suspicion Chain will hold one or two extensions at most. In universe, however, the Suspicion Chain could extend much further. Before the Suspicion Chain shatters by communication, things like the Dark Battle have already happened.”
Shi had a toot. The glimmer of the cigarette lightened his face in the dark, “It seems we can learn a lot in the Dark Battle.”
“Yes. The five starships of the Starship-Earth are just five ‘semi-cosmic civilizations’. They are not the true cosmic civilization, because they are all established by humans, and the distance between them are close. Even in circumstance like this, the Suspicion Chain still appeared in the survival impasse. In the real world of cosmic civilizations, the biological differences between different species could reach phylum, or even kingdom level. The distinctions in their cultures are even more unimaginable. Plus their matchless distance, the Suspicion Chain in between them would be impregnable.”
“So what you are trying to say is, no matter you are a virtue or vice civilization, the result would be the same?”
“Right. This is the most important property of the Suspicion Chain: regardless of the social formation and moral orientation, civilizations are only two endpoints of the chain. No matter civilizations are virtue or vice inside, they would become the same when enter the net of Suspicion Chain.”
“But if you are way weaker than me? If you are not a threat to me, would I be willing to communicate with you?”
“Not either. Here we have another important concept: Technology Explosion. She didn’t explain this concept either, but speculating this one is much easier than the previous one. Human civilization has five thousand years of history, and life on the Earth has billions of years, but modern technology was established in only three hundred years. In cosmic scale, it could not even be called development. It’s an explosion! The probabilities of technology transformation inside each civilization are bombs. If some internal or external factors fuse it, it would explode in a sudden. For the Earth it is three hundred years, but we have no reason to think us as the fastest in the universe. Maybe the technology explosions in other civilizations are much faster. Say, I am weaker than you. I would know your existence after receiving your signals, which would be the time when the Suspicion Chain is established. During this time, technology explosion in my civilization would happen at any time, letting me be far more advanced than you in technology, and thus makes me much stronger than you. Note that, in cosmic scale, hundreds of years are just one moment; also, knowing your existence, and the information I get from your messages could be the most probable fuse of the technology explosion. Therefore, even if I am only at infancy, I am dangerous enough for you.”
Shi looked at Luo’s glimmer while thought for a few seconds, and then looked at his, “So, what I can only do is to keep silent.”
“Think about it. Is that really true?”
They both kept smoking. As the glimmers flash, two faces showed in turn. In the darkness, the two men were like two gods in meditation.
Shi said, “That’s still not right. If you are stronger than me, of course you can find me some day if I can find you. Then the Suspicion Chain established. If you are weaker than me, then with technology explosion, it would turn into the first case. In conclusion: letting you know me existence, or letting you exist are both dangerous for me. They both disobey the first axiom.”
“Shi, you do have such a clever head.”
“At least I can follow you at the beginning of course.”
Luo kept silent in the dark for a long time. His face was lightened by the glimmer for a few times. Then he said, “Shi, it’s not the beginning. Our inference has already done.”
“Done? We don’t get anything yet. Where is the prospect of cosmic civilizations you have mentioned?”
“When you know my existence, you cannot either communicate or keep silent. Then there is only one choice left.”
During the long silence, two glimmers extinguished. There was no wind. The darkness and the silence were mixed together, became a pile of viscous asphalt. Finally, in the darkness, Shi only said one word.
“Fuck!”

我只看了一遍，第三部结尾没看懂
