《Reflection》
Chapter 1.
“Huff, huff” Where am I? In the countryside? I watched the streetlights were dimming yellow light as I was running alone at night, or maybe not entirely alone. The shallow white houses were standing on both sides of the street, watching me coldly as I was trying so desperately. I thought maybe I knew this place…
“Huff, huff… Ah,” swallowed a gulp of freezing air, I ran as hard as I could but still panting like a horse. The swallowed dryness of the air combined with the chilling temperature quickly absorbed the moisture of my throat; and when the breath flew in, the icy wind filled into my throat like thousands of needles poking my soft inside. The hurt it was, the harder and quicker I was thirst for breathe, “ha, ha… ha.”
I really thought all of these were just a dream.
But the harder I tried the more pain I endured. The uneven breath had wasted most of my energy, wiped out the strength I held and squished the hope of escape. Slowly but steadily, everything beyond became unclear and unreal, like vivid phantoms. My arm swung recklessly, my paced were disrupted. I knew it, sooner or later…
The darkness was expending in my eyes and blocking my view; and I felt the blood rushed down through my body, tried to rescue my muscle from overdoing. But it didn’t help. My body was still ached and tortured. And now the street light seemed vague as that dark-violet color in my eyes grew wider. The ground sometimes seemed too soft to stepped on, but if I pressed down more power on to it, it suddenly became so hard that bounced back my feet. I felt like I was dreaming, every lights, every buildings, everything were fading into the darkness as I was running away, desperately.
I couldn’t breathe…
All of these started with [] pat my shoulder. And I turned around.
I tried to recall when and why I was running so hard, but I failed. Maybe I was too tired to do so. And no matter what, I just couldn’t resist the temptation of running, escaping and fearing from that unknown stayed behind. Even though I didn’t what it was, I could feel it was getting closer,
And closer
I didn’t know who, or even ‘what’, was behind, yet I felt its breath, its presence. It was there, was chasing me, catching me, and wouldn’t let me go away. I could feel it. I could see it. I could picture that dark shadow was reaching me behind, vividly; so vivid, as if I got an eye on my back. It was stretching its arm onto me, its claw was catching me, grabbing in the air. And no matter what, each time that arm got nothing but the winter air in its hand, the closer it reached me, the more eager I could feel it.
But I just can’t turn back…
I wanna run!
Run!
And I felt something pat on my shoulder.
“!” Elise turned back, found herself sitting in a comfortable coach. A young man was sitting next to her; he looked at her out of both curiosity and concern.
“You alright?”
“Umm, yeah… I am fine.” She hesitated a little. Took a long breath, Elise lying back into the coach and tried to drive away those terrifying scenes that were still swinging in her head. She turned to her neighbor, “thanks.”
And that shallow white skeleton smiled, waved his bones and moved his jaw silently. “Nice to see you again.”

4:00 AM, Highway 5A, Okanagan connector, British Columbia;
[Elise · Rauser]
“Ahhh!” Elise · Rauser straighten her back out of the coach and screamed out of terror. Having a nightmare after a tiresome day was bad enough, but seeing a nightmare right after another one was even worse. She leant against the handle, tried to slow down her short coming gasps.
Even though the bus was full of almost deafening engine noise, even though it was still before the dawn approaches and other passenger were still in asleep, and even that scream was a small one. It seemed bothering enough for some people sitting closed by. So was her neighbor. The middle aged man in a black jacket moved a lot, rubbed his eyes, and turned to the scared young woman, “ya alright?” He mumbled in a deep voice, with his sleepy eyes half opened.
That scene was still somewhat familiar to Elise, she hesitated to answer. She knew that her neighbor, Sam, wasn’t a young man, but those two gruesome hollows filled only by the emptiness that sank into the shallow white skulls, with that creepy smile, were still swinging like flies that couldn’t go away.
While she was still hesitating, the old man saw her face darkened. He leaned a bit closer to her and asked her again, “Are you okay? You look sick.” The bus was still traveling alone on the highway. The moonlight came through the window, beaming softly into the bus. Although he was still half asleep with a messy hair, his grey eyes held strength that came from his age and experience. His stiff mustache reflected the moonlight, like steel growing out of that sharp face.
The image of the creepy skull suddenly flew away. Reality came in, she turned her face away “Come on, it’s just a dream.” Elise whispered, didn’t want to looked into those lined wrinkles covered all over that old man’s face.
“You can’t just get scared by a stupid dream.” So she turned back and smiled, "I am fine, just a dream."
But Sam had already laid his face on the window side, and fallen back into the silence again. It was too late for a conversation. Elise shocked a little and sat back tiredly, “What a fool.”
It was 4:00 AM already, but Elise wasn’t really in the mood of sleep. At the age of 27, she was still a lonely single. After her fifth attempts failed and there were none of the company left willing to hire her, her super-old-Asian-style mom sent the last warning and ordered her to come back to the hometown and find her partner of the life. Now out of the pressure, she surrendered and took the night bus came back home. She couldn’t understand why she had to follow an Asian tradition in a Western family, it was just too ridicules. But somehow her dad was standing on the mother’s side, and the saving account only had one digit left. No money to pay for the housing rent, no place to find the job, there wasn’t too many options left for her but went back home.
There was an old idiom, every sigh you made, every fortune you slipped away. Now Elise really felt she had heaved too much sigh but can’t do much about it. Honest way of saying, she didn’t look too bad a t all. Maybe not too attractive, but she did have some confidence in her blinking green eyes. Plus Graduated from UBC with a PhD in Mining Engineering, she thought there was a bright future awaited for her. “And now I am sitting on a shaking freezing cold night bus and heading back home like a failure….” She looked up and saw the moon was shining within the night sky and dark mist. And laughed out of bitterness, “Wasn’t too much left for an old granny like me, huh?” She then shivered, the winter wind could still go through the window even it was closed. She then lay curled up more inside the blanket. Found a more comfortable spot for her to shield the cold.
There weren’t too much to do in the midst of nowhere. So Elise watching those winter trees passing by as the bus was moving. There wasn’t any other sound but the muffled growling sound of the engine. There wasn’t any other light but the yellow light beam passing through the darkness. She felt that she, as well as all other passengers didn’t belong here. They were the outsiders, trespassed the silent but peaceful nature. Like her life, lonely, boring, and almost meaningless. Sigh.
Maybe that was a bad choice to even take a PhD; at least she had way more time and chance left for a real job. But nothing she could do now, except complaining to her neighbor. He was an attractive yet sedate gentle man; so nice to have such a wonderful companion in this trip. She couldn’t recall how and why she could just went on and on endlessly talking to him, even when she wanted to stop, that deep voice made her just wanted to tell more… “Ahh, maybe I was a bit too trouble-making, ack.” She thought. Then turned away from the window and fell back into sleep, not noticing her neighbor’s whisper.
