Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan has dismissed Coldplay winning BBC Radio 2′s favourite album of all-time poll and labelled the result “
ridiculous”, according to MTV this week.
Coldplay’s second record, A Rush of Blood to the Head, beat Hopes & Fears by Keane and Duran Duran’s Rio to top the public vote. Speaking to MTV News before Kasabian played a Barclaycard Arctic Disco acoustic show up a mountain at Snowbombing Festival, Tom believes poll champions Coldplay would also agree with his view. “They [Coldplay] would say that’s ridiculous and even I would say that. I’m not gonna start wars with Coldplay, I can’t be bothered. I’ve met Chris Martin and he’s cool, but they know and I know [
the poll is ridiculous].”
He has previously spoken out against Coldplay and, surprise surprise, the criticism is essentially that they’re pretty dull. (Never have guessed, eh!). He told Q Magazine, March 2010 in , “
Chris Martin is all right if you’re 35 and feeling sad that your mortgage repayments have gone up.”
And even earlier in September 2006, he said of breaking America, “
It’s really hard, man. Unless you’re fucking Coldplay or U2 and wanna fuckin’ have sex with whatever, like Bono does for world peace or whatever, it’s just really so difficult.”
Tom confirmed Kasabian have started work on their fifth studio album and he compared the sound of their new material to big beat monsters The Prodigy. “
It’s like The Prodigy’s dirty remix thing,” revealed the 32-year-old, who formed Kasabian with his best mate Serge Pizzorno in 1999. Describing what fans can expect, Tom added: “
It’s cool and it’s got really heavy drums – it sounds electrocuted.”
Leicester lad Tom also explained why American guitarist Jay Mehler recently left Kasabian to join Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye. “
What happened with Jay is we weren’t doing many gigs this year and he needs to be on the road,” said Tom. “
Jay is my brother and I got him into this band in 2006 and I looked after him and nurtured him to the ways of the UK, so I’m gonna miss him dearly and I love him. There’s no malice. He’s gone to a great rock band – Beady Eye are amazing – and I wish him all the best.”
Sounds like sour grapes on both accounts to us.
