[HanUnicorp]Han – 13 October, Unicorp’s concentration to customer service As the text describes, Unicorp is a(n excellent) corporation which always persists on their core competencies, development of operations, process management excellence, and cost management. As far as their service to customers, they have taken (proper => several???) measures to meet the customers. => Now that the text is supposed be about customer service and how = in which ways Unicorp aims to maintain or improve its high-quality customer service, the last sentence in your first paragraph should be the main sentence of this paragraph = It give the core idea of customer service. After the main sentence, please write 2 – 3 supporting sentences to illustrate the main idea in the main sentence. If you use the adjectives ‘excellent’ and ‘proper’, you express your own opinions and ideas about the company and its operations. However, you were warned not to do that. First of all, Unicorp keeps outstanding customer service in mind, they promise(s) high-quality (of) service all the time. That is how? they (make sure of = ensure?) customers’ satisfaction to the products and constantly change their old marketing methods into new terms in order to organize better management. In addition, they’re planning to develop(ing) a corporate learning system to enable them towards their previous goals and objectives also provide a higher level of customer service, that will make their customer service more perfect and easier to do. = > Now this is all true and correct what you write here, but it looks to me that you have gathered into this paragraph more than just one way. In a good paragraphing system, you write about one main idea (Here: about one way of maintaining / improving good customer service. Therefore, please reconsider the content of this paragraph.) Furthermore, which is quite important, they guarantee the quality of service. = This is a fairly general statement and you have already said that earlier in your text, but in different words. So, please consider leaving it out. They built (Do you really want to use the past tense form?) a strong commitment on quality, value, integrity and innovation, so that customers will be attracted and satisfied with products. That’s their strength and basic method to meet customer’s demand. As a result, high-quality and value-added services are promised to deliver. Additionally, they (Who is they? Unicorp, customers? – please, be always very careful with pronouns, because often it is difficult for the reader to understand what you mean by ‘they’ ‘it’ ‘this’ ‘that’ etc.) have advantage in learning faster. They can understand how to leverage their internal knowledge and combine it with practice, also get lessons from mistakes. So their company can grow fast and strategies can be achieved without a long period. => Is this really all about high-level customer service in the original text, as you mean to say, because you have ‘In other words… in the following sentence?) In other words, the company always likes to try their best to do the work and provide a high level of customer service. Han, much of this was rather good and you were mostly on the right tracks. However, now I would like you to reread the text and make sure that you actually know what you are after. Please find out the following in the original text: 1) What does Unicorp say about its customer service policy? (Please see e.g. their Corporate Mission statement, point 2 (…. Customer service) Write this fact / idea in the first paragraph and its first sentence as the main sentence. After that write about 2 – 3 supporting sentences to illustrate the idea in the main sentence. Take all information that you write from the original text. 2) How = In which way does Unicorp aim to maintain or even improve its high-quality customer service. For this you need to read the text to understand what the different ways are. Write a separate paragraph about each way, and start each paragraph with a clear and rather short main sentence in which you say the main idea of the paragraph. Again, illustrate the idea of the main paragraph by some supporting sentences. Do the same thing with every paragraph in which you write about the different ways of maintaining or improving customer service at Unicorp. In other words, as I said earlier in the class, you are supposed to use the Direct Plan in this text. Please read once again the material on ‘For Effective Paragraphs’ to make absolutely sure that you understand how you use the direct plan. Further, please make sure that you make your text coherent. In other words, make sure that you sentences hang logically together and that your paragraphs hang logically together. In this way you guarantee a logically proceeding text which is easy for the reader to read and understand. In this first version, you use the linking expressions well. So that matter is in order already. That is good. Brgds, Pirjo 2006年10月30日, 4:12:01

[new version]Unicorp’s concentration to customer serviceUnicorp wants to foster an attitude of outstanding customer service and satisfaction, so they question their old ways of marketing and recognize to develop a new strategy to diversify its customers, and still persist on their core competencies, development of operations, process management excellence, and cost management.First of all, Unicorp keeps outstanding customer service in mind, so they can promise high-quality service in a large extent. A good company may pay attention to not only their self-development, such as a corporate atmosphere, management philosophy, organizational performance criteria and career enhancement, but also condition of customers. For this reason, Unicorp has a chance to constantly enhance service quality through receiving client satisfaction and feedback.Furthermore, Unicorp takes measures to guarantee the quality of service. [Hannew version]Dear Han,First, I will give you feedback on your text by writing additions or changes, if needed, IN CAPITALS into your text.Secondly, at the end of your text, I will provide you with more general feedback on your text.Brgds, PirjoUnicorp’s concentration (to) ON customer serviceUnicorp wants to foster an attitude of outstanding customer service and satisfaction. (, so) THEREFORE, they question their old ways of marketing and recognize THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING (to develop) a new strategy to diversify its customers, (CAN YOU DIVERSIFY CUSTOMERS? – DIVERSIFY ITS CUSTOMER BASE?) and still persist on their core competencies, development of operations, process management excellence, and cost management.(WHO IS ‘THEIR’ AND WHO IS ‘ITS’ – TO WHICH WORDS DO THESE TWO PRONOUNS REFER TO? – I THINK, IN BOTH CASES THEY REFER TO UNICORP? – I REMINDED YOU OF THIS IN YOUR FIRST VERSION ALREADY)First of all, Unicorp keeps outstanding customer service in mind, so they can promise high-quality service (in) TO a large extent. (ISN’T THIS SOME KIND OF A CIRCULAR STATEMENT – KEEP IN MIND – PROMISED) A good company may pay attention to not only their self-development, such as a corporate atmosphere, management philosophy, organizational performance criteria and career enhancement, but also THE condition of customers. For this reason, Unicorp has a chance to constantly enhance service quality through receiving client satisfaction and feedback. (WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘RECEIVE’; = ACHIEVE? – ACCOMPLISH)Furthermore, Unicorp takes CONCRETE measures to guarantee the quality of service. They build a strong commitment on quality, value, integrity and innovation, so that customers will be attracted? and satisfied with THEIR products. Also they change their old marketing methods into new terms in order to organize better management. These will make their customer service more perfect and easier to do. – AVOID THE USE OF ADJECTIVES, SUCH AS PERFECT AND EASIER, IF YOU DON’T ACTUALLY DEFINE THEM WHAT YOU MEAN ON THE CONCRETE LEVEL – ADJECTIVES ARE ‘OPEN’ EXPRESSIONS AND OPEN TO DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONSAdditionally, Unicorp have advantage in learning faster.?? WHO IS SUPPOSED TO LEARN – WHO IS ‘THEY’? They understand how to leverage their internal knowledge and combine it with practice, also get lessons from mistakes. Now they’re planning to develop a corporate learning system to enable them towards their previous (WHAT ARE THE PRESENT GOALS) goals and objectives also provide a higher level of customer service. So they know what to do immediately if problems appear. Therefore, their company can grow fast and give ideal service to customers through good works.Han, now your text has improved in many ways. The paragraphs are well built in the sense that you mostly apply the system of main sentences and supporting sentences according to the direct plan in a successful way. However, at points, I as the reader of your text, find it difficult to understand the ultimate meaning of your text. You write about the ways of how they aim to secure good customer service, but at points it is difficult to know if you really understand yourself what you actually mean by all of your sentences. In other words, the ideas carried by your sentences are sometimes a bit vague. However, as I said at the beginning of this feedback, this is much better than the first version.Your grade is 3.5.Brgds, Pirjo2006年11月7日, 21:15:55

Participation was used as a control variable. The results revealed that self-efficacy in improving productivity and commitment to productivity goals are both positively correlated to attitudes towards MBO. There is no significant correlation between participation and attitudes towards MBO. Furthermore, participation and self-efficacy in working with formal management systems are positively correlated to knowledge about the MBO plan. The study establishes self-efficacy and goal commitment as significant constructs inexplaining attitudes towards MBO in the public administration. 2006年10月7日, 4:36:02

[Communication]A06BMSmall Business and I projectDifficulties in communication situations Language deficiency Owing to that English is not our mother tongue, we sometimes can’t express ourselves correctly, and may lead to some problems such as misunderstanding, so it’s really a problem that demands us to improve our English. Accent We come from different countries and have our own ways to pronounce words, so we have difficulties in speaking, especially when we use telephone to talk with other, it’s quite difficult to understand other’s talking. The other party cannot understand Ask when you don’t understand others—it’s the best way to learn whatever you haven’t known. Also, it’s better to use other ways to explain the words which other party cannot understand, such as drawing pictures, using body language or using other similar word to explain. Cultural problems It isn’t a big problem at the moment, we can get to know other different cultures and try to accept, so it won’t has some influence on us. Difficult topic Sometimes we can’t say a lot about difficult topics, but we can learn from now on, and we hope we can gain more good ideas and skills in this area.Communication Contents It decides the direction of our communication, so we can make a project for it, maybe we will need to discuss in group and decide different themes. Channels We can use email and use moodle to send information and feelings, they are easy ways to communicate. However, we have some problems when we talk face to face, and it must cost some time to adapt other’s habit in speaking. Besides, using telephone is not good because we have the accent problem. How do we learn We should talk and hear and see and do in the meanwhile, it’s better to do all the works in communication, and our communication skills can be improved then. We can also set appropriate goals and try to work towards the goal, and grow good habits to practice in a fixed time. IntelligenceOur team has all aspects in intelligence. Some people are good at logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic and musical, and most of us have skills in linguistic, intrapersonal, interpersonal and spatial. We can make up for our shortcomings each other and it’s good to develop other experience that we don’t have.Important items to learn Meetings Meetings and negotiations are very important because we gain information and make decisions from that, and they are common in communication, we should make clear what’s the aim of the meeting and what do we want to obtain from it. Also, travel is a good way to promote communication, and the social situations can help us in a large extent, we need to practice making introductions and having a small talk with other people, or explaining a process and a working method. Show ourselves Usually we give a presentation to show our features, it’s important to let others know what can we do in our works, and it’s necessary to talking about oneself and our teamwork, that can lead people to know our team clearly. Taking notes Writing memos and taking notes is important in a meeting because they help us to remember most content of the meeting. Then we should write reports and documents after that, and we can review it when we do writing. Furthermore, writing email messages and sending faxes are also convenient ways to pass information, and it’s better to do some quotations when reading a documentation because the points will be more obvious to see. Solving problems When we find fault in a work we should find the mistake first, and then analyze the fault, finally the problem can be solved. But we still lack of skills in solution, for instance, we don’t know how to deal with the EDP-problems yet, so we still need to gain enough experience in this area.2006年9月13日, 12:23:40

[Introduction+to+project] Introduction to project: Small business and I As stated in course description the aim of the project was to display and hone our skills that we have acquired during the lessons of IT, business interaction, presentation skills and time management. But maybe the most important aspect of the project was the opportunity to us to step outside the school’s premises and start to analyze the real business world, a world that we’re someday going to step in as fresh graduates searching for work. To help us to get a better picture of the reality, and not just satisfy with the front sides of companies that we see very day, some interviews were arranged. We had the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with two totally different companies: one interview with one of the owners of small Chinese restaurant Golden Flower, Christopher Liu and second interview within a large international steel factory Outokumpu Tornio Works, where export process advisor Pirjo Leino gave us an in-depth presentation of business skills and we were able to visit some of the facilities. These two interesting interviews gave us a good view and showed us great examples of how our interest might guide us into totally different ways, someday in the future. We studied hard during the lessons in school and listened carefully as the business professionals shared their knowledge with us, and all the time we tried to imagine our own future as good as we could. After all, whether our choice will be managers in a big company, a private entrepreneur running own business or just desire to continue studying, we all need to face the choice someday. An important choice of work that certainly will affect our life ←┘

Nguyen Manh Chien After interviewing 2 places, I impress some following ideas: 1. The most necessary matter is Communication skill development: The interviews require me a good communication skill. This is also needy for future job. If I’m an interviewee, I need prepare a well talk. Their content has to put in the first. The presentation skill is also like this. There are some problems with in the interviewees. They sometime digress, sometime is prepared too simple. If I’m an interview, I need have a good listening skill. In addition, the preparation require carefully as good as possible… 2. The future job needs a force to face with the most terrible challenge No one in the interviewees didn’t face with difficulties and fail. However, they still stood at the situation that they chose. Although challenges were not too easy to pass, but they believed at their talent, their study, their skill. Then, I pay attention and learned about this very much. Han Ding After interviewing two companies I found lots of opportunities in business, and I prefer Golden Flower more, maybe because it as the Chinese style which is familiar to me, but I admit that the restaurant has a really good work environment, and if possible I would like to work under this quite well circumstance. My anticipation is to be an employee in one company or other field, even that doesn’t concern about business. Like the Chinese restaurant I would like to be a waitress or a cooker because it is funny to me and at least not too difficult. To my future job I haven’t any high request especially to salary, because it will not influence my life seriously, but the premise is that the work can support myself, also the most important is that I like the job, otherwise it can be very hard and boring to me. I think my ideal job should have more freedom and not too much pressure under. I have seen some Chinese girls at the same age of me have their own work place, or even just work at home, I consider the environment into my work plan when I as them. So I like some work which is laissez-faire, and have a democratic boss at least if I work in a company. ←┘

Gleb Pripachkin So our team visited two absolutely different companies. The first was a small Chinese restaurant and the second was a big steel company Outokumpu. After this two visits I thought a lot about my future and which “way” is mine. Now I think that the best way for me is to work in such big company as Outokumpu. Restaurant business is something that situated somewhere out of my future plans. Big company is much better. The main reason of my decision is that work in such big company as Outokumpu will give me a lot of opportunities to developing. Also I think it can be more interesting for me as for manager because in big company managers work is really hard and a lot of things depend on you. I am not afraid of difficulties that I can face with. I am study here to learn how solve such kind of problems. So I chose my “way” and I will try to do everything to get such kind of job. Juhani Impiö After visiting some companies, a small restaurant and a big international steel factory, I got the impressions that they both included some things that attract me a lot: Small business offers freedom, control and ability to see results from your decisions directly. Large companies offer more stability, probably less stress related to work and regular salary, just to name few examples. I would like to separate my work from my private life. Still I understand that in a managing position some things, for instance important decisions, follow you wherever you go. Still I feel that there’s a big difference between a private entrepreneur and a manager in a large company what comes into terms of responsibility. I’m not sure where my future will take me. I might start my working career in some big company, learning from both success and mistakes, and maybe make the decision of staying or leaving after 5 years. Some aspects in small business interest me nevertheless to that extend that I would be interested to invest money into a small company and support it with my skills, still being able to take a relaxed atmosphere to working there. For me it’s a big difference between “you must” and “you can” therefore helping to run a business as a hobby sounds as an interesting idea. ←┘

Conclusion We all felt that individual opinions would be the best solution to represent our personal views. Despite the fact that we performed very well as a team, we all have different views of our future. Maybe some of us will work within the same company, be business partners or even good friends in private life. But surely our lives are not going to be identical. We all went to the interviews with open mind and tried to listen and remember as much as possible. All the questions that we had prepared before with the other teams just gave the guidelines of our interest. General questions of companies’ early steps in business life guided us to present situation and gave us some answers of what our opportunities in terms of employment after graduation might be. Learning to work in a team and having great responsibility for our work might be the most important things that we learned during these weeks. These aspects will certainly be appreciated also in our future working life. Getting a picture of companies situated around the Tornio region and getting to know what the realities in working life are, nevertheless give us great possibilities to develop ourselves and make plans for our future, wherever it might take us. We would like to say that it was a really pleasant journey of learning when doing our team work. During this period we gain experience, we learnt how to do teamwork, cooperate with each other better, and get to know how the local business works. Perhaps we will be in different areas of business in the future, but the experience we got may give help to our future working. We’re looking forward to our future. We did mistakes in our task but we were not afraid of that because we learn from that. 2006年10月20日, 0:37:36
