Skylar Grey, 27, is a rising star in the alternative/pop music world. I was lucky enough to catch up with her prior to her performance at The Key Club in Los Angeles as part of The ChapStick® Sessions.
Grey is a unique and philosophical artist, and we started our conversation by delving into the concept of uncertainty.
“While I’m not a religious person,” shared Grey, “if I were to have one, it would surround the idea of living in the moment and capitalizing on uncertainty. Out of the unknown the most amazing things are born.”
As to reinforce this idea, the inspired artist walked me through her experience of moving to and living in the Oregonian woods by herself for a span of time.
“I had been through quite a bit of pain in my life and entered a period in which I felt completely numb. By moving to the woods, my goal was really to think about life and face my fears and past pains. Sometimes I would go alone outside when it was dark and force myself to experience pure terror. I found that within me lived a fearless being, and at one point it hit me that there is nothing to be afraid of in this world.”
For aspiring artists, and anyone else for that matter, Grey’s story is pure inspiration. Her tale is one of rebirth and the willingness to let go of limitation.
“I believe that anything is possible. And a part of making the impossible possible, and letting go, is admitting when I have no f*cking idea about some things in life,” said Grey.
At the age of 23, Grey decided that she needed to let go of her former identity, Holly Brook, and embrace the superhero within. The birth of Skylar Grey led to the writing of all three hooks for the hit “Love the Way Your Lie“, made famous by Rihanna and Eminem’s rendition. For her writing contribution, Grey received a Grammy nomination and her career evolved beyond belief.
“Working with Eminem has been amazing,” said Grey. “I have learned so much from him and we have very similar instincts. He is an amazing and fun person.”
In her recent hit single and video “C’mon Let Me Ride“, Grey collaborated with Eminem once again. He is also the executive producer on her album in progress Don’t Look Down to be released in Spring 2013.
When speaking of her new album, Grey’s eyes light up. With many collaborative efforts under her belt, she has worked tirelessly to perfect her solo debut. “I am very proud of my new album. It is my own creation, and I’ve enjoyed experimenting with new concepts.”
While Grey is now living in Los Angeles, she wants to stay connected with her days in the woods. “I want that person to remain, no matter how much Hollywood plays a role in my life.” Indeed, the singer/songwriter’s debut album draws from those days. “That is why you’ll often see me in plaid shirts like the one I’m wearing now. I’m not going to let go of who I am to fit into a stereotypical Hollywood mold.”
The idea of not fitting into one musical category fits that theme as well. “I understand that this can be confusing at times to my fans, but I thrive off of variety. I can get bored very easily, and I like to keep people on their toes.”
She did just that at the Key Club last evening. Upon making her entrance, her band took her first song in the wrong direction. The youngster simply stopped, told her crew that they weren’t on the same page and had them start again.
And the crowd was pleased with her candor, roaring with applause.
