IRIS Effect” - Akita will once again be supporting the filming locations

The filming of Korean TV drama IRIS 2 started on 24 Feb in Daisen City of Akita prefecture.
In 2009, some scene locations of the blockbuster Korean drama IRIS were taken in Akita, it attracted lots of Korean tourists for visits. 8 cities in Akita will be expecting the IRIS effect and had prepared a budget of JPY 83,300,000 (approx. USD 917,000) to support the filming locations of IRIS 2.
According to the Akita Tourist Organization, some 20 staff members including the producer visited Akita to confirm the filming locations back in Dec 2012. On 24 Jan, the production house sent a crew of about 50 people to join 10 other staff members who had already arrived in Akita for the filming. The filming will be going on until 4 Feb. The filming schedule and locations will not be announced to public in order to avoid chaos as they expect fans will be rushing to the filming locations.
The drama has 20 episodes and will be airing from 13 Feb in Korea. The leads are Jang Hyuk and Lee Da Hae who received popularity from their previous historical drama “Chuno”. Akita was chosen to be one of he filming locations but airing of IRIS 2 in Japan has not yet been decided.
After IRIS was aired back in 2009, lots of Korean tourists visited Akita. However, the explosions of the Fukushima Nuclear Plant caused by the catastrophic earthquake in 2011 impacted a big drop of Korean tourists visiting Akita.
The prefectural governor visited Korea in autumn of 2011 and requested the production house to film the drama again in Akita. Last year, “The Akita Committee for Supporting the Korean Dramas” was set up and they budgeted the figures to support the filming locations.
The Chairman of the Tourist Association is expecting more Korean and local tourists visiting the filming locations and hopes Yokote city will become more prosperous.
But a F&B caterer wonders if IRIS 2 will be creating the same economical effect as of IRIS. He said the leads of IRIS were famous but he never heard the name of the leads of IRIS 2.
