The idea of the Mad Hatter pouring the blood red liquid from the cup on the saucer was critical for me. I needed this to look right, to make the image stand out and give it the quirky feel it has. I could see in my head exactly how I wanted it to look, but getting that captured in camera was not so simple. We did several takes at this so you can imagine the entire floor was covered in red wine by the time we finally felt we had it. Unfortunately, so were Ville's feet! I do remember apologising during those takes, but Ville seemed unfazed by it.

What would you say is the one thing you learned about Ville from this photo shoot?

He is a true professional.

Regarding his appearance, was that his real hair or a wig? Also, his eyes were very brilliant green--was that photoshopping? Or contacts?

The hair was definitely his. Paul X, who did the hair and make-up, totally nailed the look of Depp but gave it that extra edge we wanted. Ville's eyes are a beautiful shade of green, but I believe the magazine enhanced the saturation before it went to print.

Ville kindly signed 6 prints, which are part of the Limited Edition run of 50. One of the 6 is on my office wall, and the other 5 will be sold in a special auction with a big chunk of the proceeds going to the Nordoff Robins charity.

How long have you been doing professional rock photography for Metal Hammer?

I have been shooting music professionally for 20 years. I am Iron Maiden's official photographer, so the last 5 years have been spent traveling all over the world on board their private Boeing 757 flown by the lead singer, Bruce. In 2011, I did a book called 'On Board Flight 666' which is the ultimate Rock N'Roll adventure book.
