Phillip Phillips sure doesn't come across as your average reality TV show contestant -- i.e. a keener.
The 22-year-old Leesburg, Georgia native, is low-key with a dry sense of humor and humble about his talent.
"I'm not a great singer," he says, looking cute if dishevelled in a plaid shirt and jeans with his hair messed from a recent nap. "I think I can carry a tune but I'm nothing amazing. But, like with the music, I feel like I can do something else with it."

We caught up with
Phillips - a Dave Matthews soundalike vocally -- while he was promoting his strong-selling debut disc of acoustic pop-rock, The World from the Side of the Moon and its hit single Home (three million digital downloads and counting). He's also got stops in Niagara Falls and Windsor, Ont., on Feb. 19-20 and 21, respectively, opening for Matchbox 20.

Q. Did you have any idea what you were getting yourself into when you auditioned for American Idol?
A. I had no idea. I wish I would have known. It's been a great learning experience.I get to learn a lot more than I learned in school in such a short amount of time. .... It's been a fast moving year.
问：当你去美偶海选的时候，你知道你会得到现在这一切么？
答：完全不知道。我希望那时候我能知道。我学习了到很多东西，在如此短的时间里比学到的远比我在学校里学到的多得多。今年过得灰常快各种变化。

Q. Will you watch season 12 of American Idol, which starts Jan. 16?
A. Probably not. The show's just very pop and I'm just kind of not. And everything just happened in a strange way. I'm thankful for it but I'm probably not going to watch it this year.
问：1月16 美偶12季回归，你会看么？
答：大概不会吧。这节目太pop了而我不是。我也是机缘巧合参加美偶然后到现在这一步，事情都是会发展得很奇怪。我很感激美偶，但是我今年应该不会看的。
【哎，PP啊，干嘛老说大实话，好歹是美偶出来的嘛，就别老把心里话说出来，就说你喜欢美偶会怎么样就说你会看但是你不看也没啥嘛。。。】

Q. Do you push back against things like being styled?
A. They gave me some clothes to put on during the show but I really didn't do it. ...For me, I'm not trying to look pretty. It's about the music.
问：你是不是抵制有关时尚的任何东西啊？【】
答：当初在美偶他们给了我一些衣服我的确是不想穿。。。我并不是想要打扮得多光鲜艳丽，我只是想要把我的音乐传递给大家。

Q. I can't be the first person to say you sound eerily like Dave Matthews?
A. He's a hero of mine. But I feel like the music's different. He's a lot more complex. So I feel like there's still a difference in there. He's just one inspiration as I started getting into writing. He's up there with Eric Clapton and John Butler and Tool.
问：有很多人说你像Dave Mattews吧？
答：他是我的偶像。但是我认为我们的音乐是不一样的，他要复杂很多。是受他的启发我才开始写歌的，然后，我的偶像还有Eric Clapton，John Butler和Tool

Q. What was the American Idols Live tour like for you?
A. It was fun but it got old after awhile doing the same songs. It was a great experience so I'm not going to be mad at it.
问：你觉得美偶巡演如何？
答：很有趣，但是因为老是唱同样的歌最后就有点无聊了。是很棒的经历，所以我不会对老唱一样的歌这事有啥意见。

Q. I understand the Matchbox 20 opening dates in Canada in February sold out really fast. Will you return on your own?
A. I'd love to come back to Canada and do some headlining things or just shows, it don't matter. I just like playing.
问：我知道你给火柴盒巡演开场的加拿大的几场门票很快就卖光了，你以后会来着举行你自己的巡演么？
答：我很乐意来加拿大做自己的巡演，或者是来参加活动表演啥的，形式都无所谓，我只是喜欢表演。
