19.05.2007Hertha end season on a winning noteA late Marko Pantelic goal three minutes from time gave Hertha a dramatic 2-1 away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final game of the 2006/7 Bundesliga season on Saturday afternoon. The capital city side finished the season in tenth place. Heine makes forced changes50,500 people took their seats in the sun-drenched Commerzbankarena, where the Hertha coach Karsten Heine was forced to reshuffle his defensive line-up. the suspended Joe Simunic and the injured Dick van Burik and Jerome Boateng all missed out, so Sofian Chahed, Arne Friedrich and Malik Fathi made up the Hertha back three. Köhler makes an early exit The game began at a moderate pace, with neither side able to take the early initiative. The healthy crowd were woken form their collective snooze on 9 minutes as Amanatidis broke for Frankfurt down the left wing, from where he crossed to Köhler in the middle. Fathi and Fiedler combined to avert the danger but the Hertha keeper caught Köhler on the ankle and he was taken off shortly afterwards. After that both sides played steadily in midfield without creating much danger in front of goal. Hertha's Gimenez and Frankfurt's Toski had harmless half chances. Fink goes closeThe only thing exciting the crowd at that point in time were the score lines from the other stadiums shown on the scoreboard, as the eventual new Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart (2-1 at home to Cottbus) and runners-up Schalke who beat Bielefled at home by the same score battled for the title. Frankfurt came into the game the longer the first half progressed, and Hertha were lucky to have Malik Fathi in fine form at the back. The once-capped German international defender who has had a poor season could only look on as Finke duped Friedrich before firing the ball agonisingly wide of the far post. The first half finished goalless. Rare (and lucky!) Boateng goal puts Hertha aheadBoth teams moved up a gear after emerging for the second half. Two minutes after the break, the Frankfurt striker Takahara hit the side netting with a shot from five metres outside the Hertha box. Moments later, Kevin Boateng ran with the ball down the left wing from where he planned to cross to Pantelic lurking at the far post. As the youngster crossed, the ball slipped off the top of his boot, over the stranded keeper Nikolov and into the far corner of the Frankfurt net (48.). Pantelic unlucky not to score That lead visibly boosted the visitors, who looked comfortable on the ball and combined well. On 57 minutes Pantelic rounded Nikolov, but could only hold his head in his hands as Kyrgiakos scraped the ball off the line, onto the crossbar and out of danger. Fiedler boobA howling mistake by the Hertha keeper Christian Fiedler brought the home side back into the game. A harmless looking free kick by Streit was adjudged by Fiedler to be going wide of his right hand post. Instead the ball (to Fiedler's horror) hit the inside of the post before crossing the line (60.). Lucky visitors...Now it was Frankfurt's turn to create some pressure, and Hertha were lucky on several occasions not to concede a further goal. Amanatidis alone missed no less than 3 gilt-edged chances to score, but Fiedler, a post and the side netting (in that order) saved the visitors. The biggest chance fell to Takahara, who failed to mop up a ball which came back to him from the crossbar following a cross by Fink (68.). Pante at the deathJust as everyone in the Commerzbankarena thought that the game would end in a draw, there was late drama to come. Late second half substitute Zecke fed the ball to the unmarked Pantelic, who beat Nikolov from inside the area to score his 14th league goal of the season (joint 5th), to give interim coach Karsten Heine his 3rd consecutive away win since he took charge in April (87.).
