“I wouldn’t say it was a life-changing moment because it was more than that,” says Keith, 45. “It was when my life started. That’s the only way I can describe it. Meeting Nic was that profound for me. "Before then I didn’t really know what I was doing. Now I know exactly what I’m doing and it all makes sense. “I feel very, very fortunate that I’ve met somebody like Nic and we share the same kind of ideology.”

Keith, who wears a black leather jacket and jeans when we meet in a Hollywood office, seems shy at first but opens up as he talks about his family for the first time. He says: “I was almost 40 and wasn’t sure if I was able to be a dad. “I thought maybe it wasn’t my calling in life and I was OK with that because I’d met the love of my life and, children or not, everything was good. “Then Sunday Rose came along and it was absolutely life-changing in the most beautiful way. "Then, lo and behold, along came our second daughter Faith Margaret and now we have a beautiful family.” Describing how they chose the girls’ names, Keith, who has sold over 12 million albums, goes on: “For me, Sunday used to be the loneliest day of the week because nobody’s hanging out on a Sunday. "They’re all with their families and I used to dread Sundays. But when I met Nic, it became my favourite day of the week because we always spent it together. “Nic had the same feeling so we said that if we had a child we should call her Sunday.” The couple tried repeatedly to have another child but couldn’t conceive. Keith says: “Nic couldn’t get pregnant. Eventually someone suggested surrogacy so we entered into that process and found a beautiful woman to help us.”

He adds: “It was very hard for Nic to turn that over to somebody else and it was a tremendous amount of worry. “I kept saying to Nic, ‘You just have to have faith. It’s going to be fine. Have faith.’ And that’s how our second daughter’s name came about.” Keith and Nicole are clearly devoted parents but he says: “Who knows if we’re brilliant parents? It’s too soon to tell. "The jury’s out but we’re very attentive parents and I’m sure we do lots of things wrong but we’ll find out in good time. “Nic is extraordinary. I don’t know how she does it. "She takes care of the girls and she’s got her career but she handles it amazingly.”

Keith believes his life as a musician helps keep him fit for playtime with his daughters. He says: “I lead a much healthier life these days. “To all intents and purposes, I’m an athlete for a living because our shows are long and incredibly demanding physically. "But it also keeps me in good shape for our daughters, who desperately want to have Daddy swing them way up high at 6am, when Dad got home at 4am!”
