Aussie swimmer, 30-year-old Ian Thorpe has once again denied being gay in an interview to promote his new autobiography: 'This is Me'. When speaking to ABC News' Leigh Sales, he said he found the whole subject hurtful, especially when he was accused of lying.
Thorpe also took the opportunity to clarify that: "I don't want to offend anyone, whether they're people [who] have friends that are gay or whatever else, I don't want to offend them by getting angry about it."
Thorpe attributed the rumours to the fact that he is nerdy and does not fit the stereotype of an Australian athlete. Rumours actually began after gay fans noticed indicators such as his love of pearl necklaces for men, admitting his favourite singer is Kylie Minogue, and his interest in high fashion. Thorpe has also told the UK's Daily Telegraph that when it comes to being gay, he “ticks all the boxes.”
In the interview with Sales, Thorpe also mentioned his battle with depression and alcoholism after feeling in his teens that “something wasn't quite right”
Thankfully, these days, the former champion says that he is now in a comfortable place.
