I got there and there was some commotion but not as much as I expected. They had really cool merch. They had three shirts that I had never seen before. I got the Ally Coalition one that is an acrostic o***BTQ that says LIFE GOES BY TOO QUICKLY. I remembered seeing a picture of Rachel Antonoff wearing that shirt and loving it, so I got that one.
We went in and Miniature Tigers had started. The lead singer announced that his mom went to Calvin which is really cool. I like that they have some roots here just like fun.. They were really good but the crowd wasn’t very into it.
There was a long pause before fun. came on. It was so awesome. Nate was wearing THE mickey mouse shirt which was awesome! They started with Carry On and it was so beautiful. The band was excited to be in Michigan. One of the first things they said was that when Andrew played at Calvin with Anathallo, it was one of the top 3 shows he has ever played, so they expected this show to be great. Before The Gambler when they always talk, Andrew named off all the family and friends he had at the show and it was a lot. His old music teacher was there! As a music student, I found that so awesome. His teacher must be so proud.
During It Gets Better, on the line “not quite enough cigarettes to calm me down,” Nate said, “not quite enough…I DON’T SMOKE ANYMORE!” I don’t think people really understood what was happening but that was definitely one of my favorite parts of the show. Barlights was one of my favorites too. The confetti was amazing and I took lots of pictures of that that turned out really beautiful. The energy on that one was awesome. Someone dressed as Slenderman was crowdsurfing for a while. They played the Some Nights Intro right into Some Nights right into We are Young and that really had the crowd involved and so that was cool. Then they covered a song that I’m not really sure what it was, but the audience seemed to know it. The chorus kept saying “you can’t always get what you want” so if anyone knows it from that then yeah it was that one.
Then LOTS of people started leaving. Then the band left the stage and even more people left. After a while, they came back on and Jack talked about how this concert benefitted Human Rights. Despite the reactions I have seen on here, I thought the crowd was pretty receptive of him. He said, “Some of us here believe in God, some of us don’t. That’s fine. But we all need to know that God loves black people, white people, men women. And we all know that God definitely loves gay people.” Then they played One Foot and Stars. It was all so amazing.
In the car on the way home, Some Nights and We Are Young both came on the radio. I used the last of my voice to sing those. This was a night I will remember forever.
