06.05.07Hertha lose 1-4 at home to Werder BremenWerder Bremen kept their Bundesliga title hopes alive on Sunday evening, by beating Hertha 4-1 in the sold out Olympic stadium in Berlin. Werder deserved to win the round 32 clash. Hertha's Croatian defender Joe Simunic was sent off after 36 minutes. Sole striker systemThe Hertha coach Karsten Heine saw no reason to change the Hertha team which beat Aachen 4-0 away last time out, although he welcomed back veteran Dutchman Dick van Burik to the first team in the place of Sofian Chahed. Up front, Christian Gimenez operated alone with Marko Pantelic once again on the bench. Early actionThe sell out crowd saw the home side in charge for the opening 10 minutes, during which Gimenez entered the spotlight no less than three times, each time being ruled offside. After a quarter of an hour, the visitors began to make their mark as Womé, Rosenberg and Schulz tried their luck from distance. Rosenberg breaks the deadlock A further long range effort opened the scoring for the title contenders as their young striker Rosenberg let fly from the edge of the area, beating the home keeper Christian Fielder, although in truth, the shot did not look to be unstoppable (19.). That goal sent shock waves through the home side and Bremen knew their time had come, even though they failed to turn their large share of possession into chances. On 35 minutes, Gilberto broke into the Bremen box from where he fed Gimenez, who blasted a volley well over the crossbar. Simunic sees red Only seconds later there was major drama inside the Hertha half, as Joe Simunic produced a challenge on Schulz which the Kung Fu legend Bruce Lee would have been proud of. He caught Schulz in the region of his eye so badly, that he had to be taken off. The match referee Fandel didn't hesitate a second before showing the Croatian defender a straight red card. Bremen took advantage of Hertha's plight as Diego, Owomoyela and Wome all tested Fielder within a couple of minutes of each other. Rosenberg again...Heine brought on Jerome Boateng for Friedrich at half time, meaning that the home side reverted to a back three. Mineiro and Fathi constantly swapped positions with each other. Despite the changes, it was Werder who remained in control, as Jensen went close with a shot seconds into the second half. It took only 5 minutes for the visitors to score after the break, as Baumann capitalised on a defensive mix-up as he fed Rosenberg who doubled his personal tally by beating Fiedler from close range. Consolation goalHertha struggled going forward after that, unlike Werder. Playmaker Diego made it 3-0 from close range after superb combination work took the home defence apart. Moments later, Hertha scored what turned out to be a consolation goal as Gilberto scored, rounding off his own fine solo run war (61.). Five minutes later Dejagah and substitute Pantelic combined to set up Bastürk, who just missed the target (67.). Hats off to WerderThat was the last chance created by Hertha, on 70 minutes Werder took control again as Fiedler denied Klose and Vranjes, before Rosenberg went one better. Diego set the young Swedish striker up for his third goal of the game(82.). Not much happened in the remaining minutes so Werder ran out the deserved 4-1 winners, keeping their hopes of winning another Bundesliga title alive.
