joe mcederry has insisted that his role in the musical Tommy is not about “proving himself” after The X Factor.
The 21-year-old Geordie lad won the sixth series of the singing competition in 2009.
He is to play the part of the deaf, dumb and blind pinball star in a one-off charity performance of the show.
McElderry admitted that he was initially worried about the stigma of being an X Factor winner but claimed that the decision to take a role "different to what people would expect" was more about proving something to himself.
He told Digital Spy: “I didn't want to do a show that people would go, 'Oh, I knew he would do that', and when it was first announced I was doing this, everybody was a bit like, 'Wow'.
