Emperor 组建时间： 1991 　　emperor由samoth（drum/vocal），ihsahn（guitar）和motiis（bass）成立于1991年春天，很快乐队便录制了第一张demo《wrath of tyrant》，这使candlelight公司开始注意他们。他们也进行了人员变动，samoth成为吉它手，bard fraust加入乐队担任鼓手。91年末，乐队再次进入录音棚录制他们与enslaved乐队的split ablum。此张专集反映了emperor早期的风格。随后的一年里，mortiis离开乐队，tchort取代了他的位置。 1993年夏，乐队开始录制他们的第一张专辑《in the nightside eclipse》，专辑1994正式发行。这时他们已无可争辩的成为blackmetal乐迷心中最重要的乐队。但在此期间，乐队也遇到了不少麻烦，由于个人信仰的关系，emperor将意味着失去samoth和faust。最终，他们永远失去了faust，他因杀人被判8年徒刑。Samoth幸运的留下了，于是乐队开始重新编排，新的贝斯手alver和客串鼓手加入. 尽管乐队遇到了许多麻烦，但最终emperor还是变得更加强大，经过samoth的努力，enslaved的鼓手trym作为永久成员加入乐队。96年末，经过充分磨合，乐队又重新进入录音棚。Ep《reverence》的发表标志着他们又重新归来。97年，乐队发表了第二张专辑《anthems to the welkin at dusk》。一张具有史诗性的作品，不仅展示出邪恶的气氛，一种凄美的感觉也强烈的震撼着乐迷们。该专辑同时被英国的terrorizer杂志和美国的metal maniacs杂志评为当年的最佳重金属专辑。 乐队发表了第二张专辑后，emperor内部又一次发生人员变动，在参加完dynamo和millwaukee 重金属音乐节后，乐队宣布贝斯手alver离队。所以在他们其后的专辑《ix equilibrium》中所有的bass部分都由ihsahn担任完成。 《ix equilibrium》是乐队有史以来最令人感到窒息一张专辑，与气势磅礴的《anthems to the welkin at dusk》相比，emperor并没有继承上张专辑的风格，更确切的说，不可再单纯的认为emperor是一支blackmetal乐队。在新专辑中，你可以体会到传统重金属的元素——歌剧式的嗓音，模仿布鲁斯的节奏。当然专辑也少不了emperor的标志——交响乐式的吉它效果。此张专辑发表后各个媒介褒贬不一，也许一些emperor的老歌迷不太能接受他们的变化，在他们心中，《in the nightside eclipse》和《anthems to the welkin at dusk》是blackmetal的圣经。但对于emperor本身来说，这是一张充满实验性的尝试。可以说他们是成功的，乐队在重金属乐坛的地位也逐步提升。具最新消息，emperor的下一张专辑将会和大名鼎鼎的乐队korn的制作人ross robinson合作完成，当然这只不过是消息罢了，但很有可能乐队的下一张专辑会更令人吃惊。总的来说，emperor的三张专辑风格各不相同，第一张是一张非常经典的传统blackmetal风格。并配以宏大的背景音乐。突出表现了挪威blackmetal注重气氛的特点。而第二张则注入了emperor自己的特点，其强大的表现力可以让每一个听到他们音乐的人受到触动。加上乐队成员技术上的不断成熟，更能完美的体现黑暗的精神。而第三张专辑则是对blackmetal的一种探索，作品不再拘泥于blackmetal的传统，各类音乐元素的混合使专辑实际上变得更加深沉。
