On June 21, 2005, the day of the release of his album TheFutureEmbrace, Corgan took out a full-page advertisement in the Chicago Tribune newspaper to announce that he planned to reunite the band. "For a year now," Corgan wrote, "I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive the Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams."[54] Corgan appeared on Chicago morning television to discuss the advertisement and his new album, but elaborated little beyond the ad's contents. While performing at various drum clinics across Europe in September 2005, Jimmy Chamberlin confirmed that a reunion tour was planned to begin the next February, with a new album possibly to follow.[55] On February 2, 2006, MTV.com reported that Corgan and Chamberlin had signed a new management deal with Front Line Management, and Melissa Auf Der Maur confirmed that the pair were currently working on an album of new material.[56] That same week, Auf Der Maur declared, "My services are always there to play my favorite songs. If D'arcy [Wretzky] is not available, I'm always happy to be second in line."[57]On April 20, 2006, the band's authorized website, www.smashingpumpkins.com, confirmed the reunion stating, "It's official. The Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 1999."[58] The website later reported that the new album would be produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who produced many of Queen's albums, including A Night at the Opera.[59] According to a MySpace blog posting by Jimmy Chamberlin on October 20, 2006, they finished work with Baker and had also enlisted help from producer Terry Date, who has worked with Deftones, Pantera, and Soundgarden. In January 2007, The Smashing Pumpkins began announcing European concert dates scheduled for midyear, starting with Germany's Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in June.[60] Corgan and Chamberlin are verified as members of the band; neither Iha nor Wretzky has stated publicly whether they have participated in the reunion or intend to. Although there was speculation that Mike Garson, who has toured with the group, would become its latest member, it appears that he will not be involved in the new incarnation of the band.[61] In February, Corgan posted a MySpace bulletin indicating that the band's new album, to be titled Zeitgeist, will be released July 7, 2007.[62] Today, popular and influential 90s "alternative rock" act Smashing Pumpkins set a July 7th, 2007 release date for their upcoming record, Zeitgeist. Curiously, the date, while spelling out 7.07.07, falls on a Saturday. The record will be their first new album since 2000. To date, only Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are confirmed for the project. The slow trickle information began more than a year ago when frontman and primary songwriter/musician Billy Corgan announced the reunion.
