Sir Alex Ferguson snapped up the young keeper to strengthen his senior goalkeeping department, believing him to be one of the most promising keepers in Britain.A full international, Roy Carroll won his first cap for Northern Ireland on 21 May 1997 against Thailand. With stiff competition from Fabien Barthez, Roy found it difficult to break into the first team and make the number one jersey his own. But he proved a more than able deputy - no more than towards the end of the 2002/03 season when the Reds were closing in on leaders Arsenal for the title. Barthez picked up an injury and Roy stepped up to complete the ten appearances needed for the first Premiership medal of his career
