For Immediate release The Coromandel shines for international film star despite the wet weather
If you were wandering the streets of Thames or Whitianga earlier in the week you may have bumped into a world superstar without even knowing. Kim Nam Gil, a famous Korean actor spent 2 nights in The Coromandel as part of a 10 day trip throughout New Zealand. Nam Gil was brought out by fashion magazine Marie Claire Korea and hosted by Tourism New Zealand, Destination Coromandel and the Coromandel tourism industry.
Kim Nam Gil is an acclaimed actor with a strong female fan base in Korea. Marie Claire magazine brought Nam-Gil and a support crew of seven people on his first trip to New Zealand. A personal manager, fashion stylist, hair and make up crew, photographer, scripter, journalist and travel guide all braved the wet weather that forced road closures earlier in the week in an effort to portray a relaxed self drive holiday.
Tourism New Zealand wanted to demonstrate that unlike Korea where the cities tend to have all the action, in New Zealand you can enjoy the relaxed countryside but still have access to sophistication and rejuvenation when you need it. The crew travelled by campervan, stopping off in Thames for lunch before heading to Hot Water Beach in time for the low tide. Hot Water Beach Holiday Park hosted the guests with a typical kiwi barbeque, employee Erin Nixon contacted a friend in Korea to find out what all the fuss was about, “My friend in Korea couldn’t believe he was coming to stay at Hot Water Beach Holiday Park and that I’d get the chance to meet him. He has a huge following over there - she described him as one of the most talented Korean actors of his time. Hopefully we’ll see more Koreans coming to the Coromandel after his visit.”
A morning spent at Cathedral Cove was followed by a well-deserved soak in The Lost Spring, which encouraged the visitors to consider a return trip. The final night was spent at Puka Park in Pauanui before the crew departed for Hobbiton on route to Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown to complete their New Zealand tour.
Marie Claire Korea is a monthly magazine with a circulation of 80,000. Coverage of the trip will include a New Zealand travel story on Kim Nam Gils website, a travel book released late in 2012, regular social media posts while travelling and a travel story by a Hyecho Travel Agency to help stimulate self drive holidays.
South Korea is New Zealand’s seventh largest market for both international visitor arrivals and expenditure. The average length of stay for South Korean holiday makers is 11.2 days with an average of NZD$2,600 spent per visit.

The Coromandel shines for international film star despite the wet weather

Claire Korea)
The
