After smashing world records in Sydney and Athens, the London Olympics will be the hardest for swimmer Ian 'Thorpedo' Thorpe. Australia's leading gold medal holder won't be in the pool having failed to qualify, but a charming and confident Thorpedo told Metro he'll be back.
Q: Is it difficult not to be competing here?
A: That's sport and frankly I wasn't where I needed to be. I'd love to be here (competing) but I'll enjoy the games and cheer on the Australian team. I think I can get back to my best with the right preparation but time ran out on me this time.
Q: How will the Australians do without you?
A: We're strong in the relays and we have some great swimmers but the US have dominated for years now. The French look good too.
Q: Michael Phelps is going for a record gold medal haul. You know the pressure – will it affect him?
A: He's going to win a lot more and I can't wait to see it. Michael has been smart picking less events – the ones he knows he can win, and he has a great rival in Ryan Lochte.
Q: Are you attached to your world records?
A: I don't mind them being broken. I realize when you break a record that stands in history, but that's there for the next generation who will eventually be better than you.
Q: Is it true that swimmers are the Olympic village party animals?
A: Haha, no, the rowers.
