Zooey Deschanel was awake early this morning — because others woke her up. Phone calls and texts from agents, friends, publicists, her manager, and her sister (Bones star Emily Deschanel) clogged the New Girl stars’ inbox after it was announced that she had snagged her very first Emmy nomination for her work on the Fox comedy. “I wanted to be an actress since I was 2-years-old,” Deschanel told EW. “It’s always been my dream and ambition. This is the kind of moment you dream about. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I could have this incredible honor and recognition. It’s just so exciting.” And unexpected, she adds. “I have such a great job that’s just such an incredible gift, and I always want to be doing the work because I love the work and not for some other reason. [But] it just means so much to have this nomination.” Deschanel wasn’t the only New Girl cast member to walk away with a nod this morning. Her co-star Max Greenfield, with whom she says she’s been trading e-mails this morning, was honored in the Supporting Actor category, where he’s up against a quartet of men from Modern Family. “We’re a pretty fun set, so there will be celebrating,” she says. Creator Liz Meriwether, meanwhile, has her focus elsewhere, according to Deschanel. “She’s really excited, and I think most everybody is most excited about the dress. ‘I’m so excited for you — what are you wearing?!’” she says with a laugh. New Girl starts production the first week of August and while Deschanel has been “texting Liz constantly” for scoop on the next season, she’s not exactly sure what’s in store for the first episode. But, she says that the show’s pair of acting nominations is a great note to start the show’s second season. “It’s just so exciting to see the show blossom and get to collaborate with all these wonderful people,” she says.
