More bad news for "American Idol" champ Phillip Phillips -- his family's Georgia pawn shop was burglarized last night after someone used a backhoe to smash open the back door.
Sources connected to the investigation tell us ... the bad guy (or guys) took more than $4,000 worth of merchandise ... including hand guns, flat screen TVs, antique coins, necklaces, rings and the ENTIRE CASH REGISTER.
We're told the register only had $110 inside at the time.
Law enforcement believes the power and phone lines to the store were cut before the burglary and the backhoe (a piece of heavy machinery used in construction) was hotwired and stolen from a nearby job site.
We're told roughly 25 cop cars responded to the scene to hunt for the perps -- but so far, no arrests have been made.
Phillip and his parents were not in Georgia during the heist -- the family is in California helping Phillip recover from a recent kidney surgery.

The shop was heavily featured this season -- particularly during Phillips' poignant return home in May. The business is currently up for sale through Willcox Realty. Phillip's father, Donald, is said to have considered selling it for $200,000 prior to his son's winning season. It went on the market ten days before the Idol finale.
Phillips made no mention of this on Twitter this afternoon, although he did tweet that he was "Ready to be able to pick the guitar back up and REALLY play.....its been too long!"I

Things are looking up for the family, however, as the Albany cops zero in on a suspect, described in the police report as a 40- to 50-year-old non-Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall, and weighing about 225 lbs. According to Fox News. He has a black crew haircut, brown eyes, a medium brown complexion and medium build and was last seen in a dark pullover shirt with khaki shorts.
Phillip’s reaction to the break in, according to Phillip’s dad, Donnie, “He shook his head and said, ‘Dang, Daddy I hate to hear that. …Well, that’s how some people in the world are,’”
“They got a pile of jewelry, coins, guns, TVs, rod and reels. Just a lot of stuff,”, Donnie told WALB in Albany about the robbery.
“There ain’t no telling what would have happened if I had been up here,” said Donnie, “[But] If they catch them, I hope I can get a check every month. I don’t care if it’s a dollar a month so it will remind that person or those persons to see what they’ve done and see what road they’re going down.”
