Bill Sweetenham, the Australian in charge of British swimming, believes his compatriot Ian Thorpe could yet reverse his decision to walk away from the sport at the age of 24. Thorpe announced his retirement in November after winning five Olympic and 11 world championship gold medals. Sweetenham, who helped create the Australian youth programme which fostered Thorpe's extraordinary talent, admitted he had been surprised by Thorpe's decision and predicted that the lure of top-level competition would prove too difficult for him to resist a comeback. "As an Australian I would have loved Ian to stay on the team and be the team captain, either as a competitive or non-competitive captain, and also be a strong member of the relays teams," Sweetenham said. "As a swimmer he is the greatest athlete I've ever worked with or watched and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't reappear, in fact I hear rumours about that already."
