Jay DeMarcus & his wife Alison are expecting their second child this summer, and we now know the baby’s name! Rascal Flatts co-host Country Countdown USA this weekend, and Jay broke the news to host Lon Helton: “We really are thrilled to be having a boy, and we’re gonna name him Dylan Jay DeMarcus. My wife, being the sweetheart that she is, decided that Jay needed to officially be in the family , so we decided to call him Dylan Jay DeMarcus.” While the new baby is partly named for his father, it’s not actually Jay’s legal name. He explained, “My real name is Stanley Wayne DeMarcus Junior. My parents hated the name Stanley and they both hated Wayne, but my dad wanted a namesake. So my mom said, ‘I’m not gonna call him JR, I’m not gonna call him Junior, I’m not gonna call him Wayne because my dad went by Wayne, so we’re gonna call him Jay, so my name has been Jay my entire life, and you can imagine the nightmare in school, trying to get a driver’s license, because I was always called Jay.” In keeping with the history of Jay’s name, band-mate Gary LeVox suggested, “Dylan Jay DeMarcus, they’re gonna call him Todd!” Little Dylan is expected sometime in August. At that time, the group will be mid-way through their Changed Tour.
Dylan will join older sister Madeline, who was born in December 2010. Lon asked Jay for the latest news about his daughter. “She’s great. She’s got so much personality, her eyes did eventually turn brown, they’re not blue anymore, but her hair’s still dark, and she’s got the DeMarcus dimples. She’s got so much personality, it was a blast to watch her for her first real Easter. It was really funny watching her picking up Easter eggs. Then she started seeing little boys picking them up, so she’d go over to them and take them out of their baskets.”

A few months ago, Rascal Flatts met NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow. At the time, Tim was with the Denver Broncos, and the band was performing a concert in the Mile High City. Two weeks ago, the group reunited with the newest member of the New York Jets at his annual Tim Tebow Charity Golf Tournament at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville Florida. Among the other participants was new Masters Champion Bubba Watson. They talked about it with Lon Helton on Country Countdown USA: “He’s a heck of a nice guy. He didn’t wear his green jacket, I was surprised. He came in with a plaid shirt and sleeves rolled up. I’d have worn that championship jacket everywhere. He played in the group right behind us. I’d just watch him play. It was unbelievable. He committed to doing the event before he won the Masters and kept the commitment.”
Who else was there? “Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit, Prime Time was there, a bunch of football players. Christian Ponder from the Minnesota Vikings. He’s a Florida State alum, so he got a lot of kidding that night, because there was a bunch of Gators in the house. Tim said, ‘One of our best players, Christian Ponder, thanks for throwing the interceptions, we couldn’t have done it without you!”
So what are your thoughts about Tim Tebow? “He’s just 24 , and he has hospitals all over for kids. To be such a great spirit. He’s a man of God that doesn’t waver. He’s used his platform for the greatest things. He spends so much time with kids, his time is to serve, that’s what he feels he needs to do. His whole speech that night was making moments. Not in our lives, but make a moment in someone else’s life.”

There were several amazing duet moments during the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. One brought together Rascal Flatts with actor/comedian Steve Martin. In addition to his many talents, Steve is a Grammy winning banjo player. So it was natural to include him in Flatts latest hit, “Banjo.” They talked about it with Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton: “It was one of those things where they asked him to do it, and he heard the song, but wasn’t sure if his bluegrass style playing would work with what’s in that song. So we had a lot of phone conversations, which is strange to hear Steve Martin on the telephone. I even have two voicemails that I saved from him. So we talked back and forth, and he really practiced and got the tune down pat. It was such an honor to stay with Steve Martin and make music with him, he’s wildly talented guy and a delight to be around. We sat backstage with him for two days before the awards. We’ve never rehearsed so much in our life.”
Music wasn’t the only subject Rascal Flatts discussed with Steve Martin. They also talked about his movies: “It was wonderful to talk with him about his movies. He said we should go out in the Three Amigos costumes if we wanted to do this right. I think Gary asked what’s the favorite role you played in a movie, and he said ‘It’s really hard, because I’ve played the serious guy who’s funny like in Father of the Bride, and somebody who’s a jerk in Planes Trains and Automobiles, so it varies. I really loved playing Father of the Bride because the guy is funny unintentionally.” Then he said his favorite location shoot was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. My question was ‘Since you don’t have instant feedback from an audience, do you know that you’re making a funny movie?’ And he told me, ‘The only thing I can tell you is it feels funny, but you don’t really know until years later, if they endure.’
Jay DeMarcus told Lon he got insight into Steve experiences as a comedian: “The night before the ACMs, I saw comedian Ron White at the Mirage. Steve and I talked about it, and he asked, ‘How long is his show?’ And I told him, ‘About an hour and a half.’ He said, ‘Wow, that’s really hard as a standup comic. I used to do 45 minutes and it was all I could do to maintain focus and be funny all that time.’”
